Canes don't have the RD Depth or the Cap Space to make this work. They'd essentially be turning themselves into the Leafs from like 3 years ago

Pesce is not worth Nylander. Never has been and never will be. Pesce is a 30 point 2nd pair defenceman. Those are not close to as valuable as a top line 40 goal scoring point per game star. This has to stop

Relax. No argument there. I would consider this the starting template for a hockey trade. Canes add. No need to add on the leafs side. No timmons or Lilj necessary. Seriously.

I get you likely "like" the player, but this swap we do 10x out of 10. Nylander for Pesce straight would be a massive steal! Chatty as RD2 and Tony as RD3 (Cogs is also RD). You have to be realistic that what our team needs is better production from our forward group, which Nylander would provide. Pesce while good is a middle of the road 4D and Chatfield can take his spot without any drop-off. I see it more likely that we roll with Pesce (unless we can get a return like Nylander) and shop Skjei, sign a 3rd pairing LD - we aren't going to pay a 3rd pairing defenseman $5-7MM. This would absolutely not put us in the Leafs position from 3 years ago.

Chatfield is arguably not a top 6 D man and you want him in the top 4? That should show you everything that is wrong with this deal. The value is absolutely great. No denying that. But this is like saying Carolina could go and trade Necas for someone like Roman Josi. Could they? Absolutely. Is the value fair? Yes. Should they? No. It leaves the roster incredibly weak in a position that they are already having issues, and it would create a jam at RW. You can play Nylander at LW, but then why sign trade for Nylander to play 2nd line because he's not beating Svechnikov out for 1LW.

On top of that, this would leave the Canes 2 million over the cap with a gigantic RD weakness. It puts them in the position of the Leafs 3 years ago, that's quite easy to see
