Absolutely not. Even with retention, Petry makes a million more a year than Gudbranson and he's five years older. Yeah, one less year on the contract, but Gudbranson probably won't be here that last year anyway. And this has us adding a pick for the privilege? No. Plus, ideally Gudbranson is forced to the 7D role by Jiricek anyway; Petry isn't playing over Severson, a Jiricek who forces them to play him with his performance, and whichever of Peeke/Boqvist isn't traded so there's even more money rotting in the pressbox.

Gudbranson is overpaid by a million or two; if he made 2.5/year no one would say a word about him. His role on the team is much more important than any statistical impact he may or may not have on the ice. With Babcock coming in, it's even more important to have the player who stood up to Sutter in the room. With the young players cycling through the lineup, it's important to have the size and meanness on the roster (remember what he did to Boris Katchouk?). Another year of Gudbranson will be fine, especially if he sees more pressbox time than icetime.
