This is a very fair and well thought out response. I appreciate this comment because you've brought good supporting information. And I do agree with much if it.
I actually don't hate Nylander. He can be very useful. I'm a Hawks fan (previously said Kaner's a 1way player...just last comment) and I get the game takes all types of players to create a team. I just don't want to take the risk. I'd prefer to stick to the plan. Don't lose draft picks or assets. Draft and develop you're own players. There are no quick fixes.
I agree with everything you have said, to a point. I predict we are going to see massive inflation to player salaries over the next few years starting next summer. Nylander might be a bit ahead of the curve in that sense, but, in due time, a $10M AAV for a player like him should become fairly standard. And if it weren't for the cap and the market on players being as low as it is in the NHL, he would be worth every bit of that, in comparison to other major league sports salaries.
I think Nylander thinks he is a superstar in the shadow of others. If we recall Alex's time with CHI, their dad seems to pump their tires WAYYY too much. I think they have an inflated ego and sense of entitlement because of that. Their father, as their agent/manager or whatever, doesn't have the ability to be impartial and is therefore unable to take a step back and see them for what they are. But, Willy could not drive a team or a line by himself, and he could not steal a ton of games the way some of the other players you mentioned can. Don't get me wrong, he is a VERY good top 6 forward, but I don't know what team is going out of their way to trade valuable assets for him if he is looking for 8 figures. I'd just wait to see if he gets to the UFA market next year, if so, put my best bid in and move on. He isn't someone I would chase unless I knew he'd accept something like $7.5m x 6.
