Does he really though? Both were Selke finalists. Hischier is a ppg center and Marner is an above ppg winger. Hischier is on a much more friendly contract for the type of player he is. Sorry, but as a Toronto fan, NJD doesn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

4 years of a selke nominated centre at 7.25m cap is worth more than 2 years of a selke nominated winger at 10.9m cap.

Tell me why exactly is New Jersey trading their (yes, ppg) center for a much more expensive winger they don't need? Both Hischier and Marner are elite defensively, but the Devils don't need wingers. And with Hischier's steal of a contract and the fact that he plays a more important position, the Devils just don't even acknowledge this move.

Marner has the same defensive capacity as Hischier. But he has also shown to be a bigger point producer. So to say that Marner is closer to Lazar than he is to Hischier is nuts.

Now I believe Hischier has more value than Marner because he is a centre AND he is signed for 4 years versus 2 years AND his cap is 7.25m versus 10.9m.

But if caps and term were equal, Marner would have more value. But it wouldn't be by much.

Why would jersey do this? Well I agree it doesn't make much sense for them at this point with their wealth of offence, but they undoubtedly improve. They get a better player who is still young and is much better offensively. Hischier's best season, last season, is the closest he's come to a ppg, but in fact did not reach it. Other teams would benefit from Marner more but come on. He's been chosen as the best right winger in the league twice now (1st team all-star) and is just entering his prime. But it's capfriendly so he is an overpaid bum no one wants. It's just insane at this point.
