This is an amazing trade. There was no way Montreal would move Dach for PLD because they gave up the 12th overall and a 3rd for him. Instead the send a late 1st and 2nd out for Newhook. 🤣🤣🤣

Montreal: Acquire a top 9 forward who will fit right into their core group. Young with lots of potential.

Colorado: Trade a Young Player who doesn't have a spot on their roster for more futures that will likely end up being flipped in the short term for more win now assets.

Fair trade

Normally, I would agree with you, but, and this is a big butt, the 2023 draft is very deep. This isn't a very late 1st and a very early 2nd. This is like to mid-level 1st in a normal year. I think Montreal gave up too much. Both of those draft picks could turn out to be worth more than Alex Newhook.

PP points on a mediocre powerplay aren't particularly valuable when you aren't the play driver

Does it really matter whether the Canadiens or the Avs win this trade? I mean the first round pick used as trade bait, besides Newhook, was Florida's, the first of many to come. Florida improved Montreal, and Avs. Go Sakic!!!

Future top 6 forward for 2 picks that will likely never become full time NHL players. Clearly makes sense for Montreal.

Middle 6 forward I would say

“ you can’t trade for big time centres , you have to draft them!”

Same dude that refused a Subban trade for Draisaitl and a 1st in 2016 according to Kevin Weekes

Montreal was asking for Draisaitl, but edm was willing to give up Hall and a 1st not Draisaitl

Zero percent? Disagree. It's a really deep draft and unless Montreal screws up, they should have at least one NHL regular there. Hell, given how deep the draft is and historically how well drafted players perform, there's a better than 50/50 chance BOTH players play more than 100 games in the NHL. Most early draft picks who play 100 games make it past 300, so Montreal should end up with at least one NHL regular.

Montreal just gave up more for Alex Newhook than they got for Jesperi Kotkaniemi... just throwing that out there

Yeah but your team is stuck with soft KK for 8 long years. Ask coach Brind'amour how he likes it

As a habs fan this is a bit dissapointing. Giving 31st and 33nd for Newhook is a bit too much, espacially because of how stacked the 2023 draft is.

Its 31 and 37. Pretty much 2 2nds for a talented, hard working, good skating kid. Unless someone like Cristall or Gulyayev fell.. Its very mid. The draft falls off after picks 20-22. Its a top heavy draft. Lots of talk that Armstrong in St Louis is moving both his late 1sts at 25+29 as well. Some are convinced he wont make those picks at such as Elliot Friedman.

Newhook really has not progressed in Colorado now we will see if that is lack of opportunity or unrealistic ceiling. For what is essentially two 2nd rounders it is a good gamble for the Canadiens

Sure it is a deep draft for the first 20 picks although after that it is rolling dice like every other year. It is not a case of this years 3rd rounders would be firsts any other year as it is just top heavy.

Might give The Avalanche the chance to pick the first goalie but otherwise third liners by these picks

Avs get some much needed draft capital. Newhook had his opportunity to secure a role with the Avs last year and couldn't quite do it, still a great young player with potential but no real spot for him on the avs roster. Good fit for Montreal, Newhook could thrive under St. Louis. Fair trade.

Yeah its like any other draft after those top22 or so picks. Wheeler, Pronman all say the same. A great draft doesnt mean a deep draft and most drafts really fall off at a point in the 1st round. The earlier pick here is 31OA and the odds it amounts to anything is very slim.

Actually I just checked players who are drafted from 31-40 are more likely to not be as good as Newhook. I'm still not a big fan of the trade but after watching some videos sure as hell excited to have Newhook playing for the habs.

Odd move for Colorado, unless they plan on moving those picks for another veteran (Wheeler perhaps?)

Not sold on Newhook being a top 6, and those picks should still yield you prospects that would normally go higher in this deep draft.

It's not just the first 20 picks or so. At lot of people are saying last 1st to mid second are also better than average. So no, 3rd rounders are not be picked in the first round on a normal year, but someone going 50th overall would have been taken around 40th.

Its all speculation but the experts aren't saying that at all! Most say its very top heavy which makes it special..Guys even like Honzek are being talked about in the mid teens and are seen as bottom 6 players, hell, Nate Danielson is seen as player that might go top10 yet his upside is in question. The variance from 8-22 is all over the map. If anything the draft is overhyped as things tend to be the case.. this close to the draft.
