Why do the sharks do this? Just because we moved Burns does not mean we eat another contract for next to nothing again. Different scenario and Karlsson his 5 years younger.

I think the Sharks are going to get screwed by Karlsson wanting a trade.

I think they'll get more for EK than Burns though. Who knows though. Grier's been awful so far. Why change?

Grier hasn’t been bad, you can see hints of his plan.
Yea we’re getting more than this but not as much as we would hope for.

It won't look like the Burns trade.

Pretty sure Burns was the same age when he was traded as EK65 will be when his deal is up. EK65 is coming off a better season on a worse team and should win his 3rd Norris Trophy tonight.

Burns had a NMC with a small trade list and would only agree to a trade with a team that had a chance of winning the cup that year. Basically a very small market of teams who are both competitive and had cap space. Karlsson said last night he's very open to where he's traded to as long as they have a chance to be competitive and are in the playoffs. That's a much larger market. Bigger market = return closer to value.

The Burns trade was done in Grier's first month with the team when the mandate was to see if we could still win and try and get back to the playoffs. We immediately used the cap space to sign guys like Sturm, Benning and Nuutivaria (he ended up injured all year). We're now on a post-Timo Sharks and no longer expect to be competing for the playoffs for a while so we don't need to free up cap space for anything. The Sharks would be happier to keep EK65 as long as needed than to trade him for a Burns like return.

Admittedly I'm harsh on this, but it's because I care I swear.

He's been in the gig for a year and I don't think he's done well at all so far. He's picking up okay to good prospects and shipped out talent for less than their value.
I hope I'm wrong in the end obviously, but I see us getting locked down for a decade.

Different market, Burns was four years older, sharks are now in a different mindset without Timo, cap is going to go up significantly in a couple years. This won’t be the same trade. Not saying SJ is going to get a major return for minimal retention but Karlsson is coming off a probable Norris season while Burns was clearly declining.

Ok Burns was not the superstar he once was, but was still a very capable top line 1RD. The issue is more Burns 38 and 3 more years, vs Karlsson being 33 and 4 for more years.
Karlsson is a safer bet being almost 6 years younger and his deal ending at 36 not 41. While the 3 1sts is a pipe dream I do feel 30-50% retention for a high level prospect/ young NHL guy and a 1st isn’t out of reach.

if you want to dump Joseph (3 years @ 3m, 4th line guy) fine but you are not getting a 4th (or any pick) for that contract, there are lots of cheaper options out there.

Grier has made a few sweetheart deals and is working on building relationships (not a bad idea for a first time GM) when the sharks don’t need home runs. He has moved out players that don’t fit the sharks master plan and started building a stronger prospect pool. I’ve hated the initial deals but I’m starting to see the plan.
I’m holding out judgement till next draft.

I do think he’s playing chess and the long game.
Remember Wilson was difficult to deal with and
Grier has to change that opinion about the team while revamping/ rebuilding a very weak lineup and prospect pool. Expect next year to be very bad (#1 OA is a strong possibility) I don’t think the sharks are a playoff team again till 25/26 at the earliest.

The LD prospect pool went from weak to strong this year, I have to assume he does the same for the other positions this year and next and by the end of the 25 draft I have to assume sharks will have a top 10 prospect pool with a solid young NHL core.

I said "anywhere for a 4th round pick".

And Joseph doesn't need to be traded because we are not bringing in EK65.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Joseph is not a 4th line guy at all. As a young player on a team that made the SC finals 3 years in a row maybe but in Ottawa he was 7th in TOI/GP (Norris was injured though) and has had a 0.45 PPG since being traded, which is 37 pts per 82 games

He is a plus skater and elite on the PK. He can be frustrating offensively as he left you wanting more but that's why he's a 3rd liner and not a 2nd liner. He has above average advanced stats too and he did that playing on probably the worst bottom-6 in the league last season. He was Ottawa's best bottom-6 forward, which is exactly the problem. If he's your 9th-10th forward, you're in good shape

If you're tight against the cap, you might be forced to hire a cheaper option for sure, he's pretty much a luxury with his salary under this cap crunch

he was .32pg @ 14min hes going to be 27 in the season - im not saying he is terrible, he is bottom 6 but at 3m year 3 more years why is OTT trying to move him (they have 17m cap space).

He plays 2:31 per game on the PK though.

Like I said, he had pretty poor linemates in general. Norris injury forced Pinto to move up in the lineup, Greig had his injuries too and only played 20 NHL games.

I think his best regular linemate was Tyler Motte... Also a lot of Brassard, Kastelic, Gambrell (who just doesn't produce offensively at all)

His contract is not ideal but 3rd liners are often paid 3 M$ or more... The problem is the market, most teams trying to compete are close to the cap.

Anyway, Sens need Joseph next year so no point trading him, they can afford him as they will trade DeBrincat

      Quoting: bwhsocal

Who said that? I haven't seen that anywhere...

And the cap space would be pretty tight if they were going to re-sign DeBrincat. They also have to re-sign Erik Brannstrom and Shane Pinto, 2 young quality players. Plus they need another goalie, more like a 1A/1B type. There's also other spots to fill

Lmaoooo. A dman who just put up 100 points and will win the Norris Trophy at ~7.5m will cost you a lot more than some scraps.
