15 months ago, the Yotes gave up the 47th OA pick for McBain. Fast forward and they're cutting bait with a 23 year old for a 3rd? I don't buy it.

I mean from that perspective.... I get it... why'd they trade the 47OA for a bottom-six guy?
A third-round pick seems like much more fair market value for McBain than a 2nd

I don’t really see the incentive for ARI to do that but if they do sure.

Also, you gotta fill in 3C and fix the third pair. Those are major holes in the roster and you’ve got cap and assets to fix it with.

He was coming off of a solid NCAA season, and the Yotes were flush with picks. I agree that it was probably an overpay for a guy that wasn't going to sign in Minny, but I don't think they just pack it in at this point. I'd imagine he sees more icetime in year 2 (2.25?), and they roll with that.

At some point, you've gotta stop flipping everyone for picks (IMO).

I'm dumping Drury so that Pono or Rees could get some NHL time

I don't see that happening soon (since Arizona seems like it's still tanking and Management is still a mess)... I added a couple more assets to make it worth Arizona's time in V2.

Idk he's big, young, plays center, and has shown he can add scoring. Less than 30% of 2nd rounders ever play 200 NHL games and he's already 1/2 way there. Tbh it's looking like a pretty decent trade by AZ. Certainly not a "bad" move.

What is the incentive for them to just cut bait, grab a 3rd and draft someone who probabilistically speaking, is very unlikely to be as good as McBain is? Doesn't make any sense.

Understood, but no need to fire sale the guy. He's worth more in a package for a bigger piece. Need to be more shrewd here.

"he's big, young, plays center, and has shown he can add scoring"... That and his being physical is exactly why I wanted to add him to the team... I'm sure I could've added some more (and I did in V2)

He has potential for more, he's only 23. And why would Drury be worth the same amount when he's not even a 3rd liner like McBain?

McBain is also 6'4" Power Forward, the return would probably be similar than the Jeannot one if they trade him.

I agree that the 3C could be fixed but that third pairing is quite solid.... Chatfield showed that he can play his offside in a decent sample size and Honka did very well in the AHL last year and he seems like he could break through into the big leagues

What are you smoking? Tampa massively overpaid for Jeannot. Those kind of third-line power forwards are worth more in the realm of a 2nd and a pretty good prospect. So probably like a 2nd and Gleb Trikozov

It’s a step back from this year most likely and at best it’s a high risk move that could backfire really poorly.

Chatty played well on his offside in limited minutes with a high end partner. Honka looks like a good prospect but isn’t ready for the NHL yet and asking chatty to full time move over to his offside with an inexperienced undersized dman is asking for trouble.

Especially when you have the cap space to put a bridge solution in place. It’s a win win.

That's fair... I just don't see anybody in free agency that's going to fit really well and keep up the talent except for Shayne Gostisbehere

Yes, Tampa overpaid, but why would the Yotes trade McBain for anything less than that when he's part of their future? Also you didn't answer the first question - Why would Drury be worth the same amount when he's not even a 3rd liner like McBain?

Coyotes building a rather big and tough team to play against, add a reinbacher/benson in this draft, big and tough kind of all ready covered. Going to be an interesting team going forward.

Yeah the market isn’t great which will lead to overpayment. Guys like Soucy Mikula would be my first check in. A flier on OEL could work out really well but would want a 7D ready to step in. Guys like Seeler wouldn’t be bad and maybe some others in the trade market since that’s our preference of acquiring players. Heck, with the cap space you have I’d be fine bringing ghost back or trying to.

It might have to do with the fact that McBain is playing third-line minutes because of the horrible depth in front of him and Drury would probably be in the same spot if he was on the Coyotes. The Coyotes are still in a rebuild and could use the future assets that would fit more in line with the timeline of their future core. McBain will probably be 28 or 29 by the time that they are good again

If we're bringing back Ghost for one year at a massive overpayment... I'm fine with that because of all of the cap space we have this year and how bad the market is... If it gets longer then that then I might get concerned
