Description
This leaves the Canucks $7M to upgrade the roster, during the season through trades. The better the team is at the trade deadline, the more risk they can take with rentals. This Free Agency draft class is weak, so you need to make low term, low salary commitments.

Any big cap commitments need to made through trades, like Noah Hanifin, so you don't overpay desperate UFAs.

Tyler Myers has $1M salary, with a cap hit of $6M. It will save owners a lot of money, while help their team reach the cap floor. At the trade deadline, Myers 50% retained can fetch another 3rd round pick. It is free picks.

I'd assume Hanifin would get a contract at least on par with Severson, Sanheim at 6.25x8.
Dermott is a 7th/8th D at best right now and needs to prove he's not done from the concussions. I think he'd be in a fight with Johansson/McWard for bottom pairing RHD until Bear came back.

I think Hanifin makes a lot of sense to fill the OEL void. As long as we re-sign him it could be a nice move for us.

The only thing is if he doesn't wanna play in Calgary it's probably because he wants to live in america so unlikely he'd resign. He's not the finishing piece you trade more 1st round picks for either in my mind. Like you could have had Severson for a 3rd. Similar level players.

Hanifin is younger and extending him long term would be better than extending Severson.

It's interesting because Severson spoke in an interview about how he's talked to guys who train in Kelowna and play for the Canucks. He straight up said that the Canucks were one of his preferred destinations in Free Agency before CBJ got to him with that massive offer. The Canucks have also been working with agent Dan Milstein frequently and Gavrikov is a client of his that was expected to hit UFA. Those two guys would have completely revamped our defense core but other teams prioritized them and kept them. Missing Gavrikov hurts now with OEL gone, that would have been an instant upgrade.

True Hanifin is a couple yrs younger. The good thing is anyone will be an instant upgrade on OEL. He was playing at below replacement level.

I wouldn't mind if we made a play for Graves. I think he and Hronek could make a decent pair.

I'd rather keep our picks and hopefully sign a guy like Graves instead.

Value is fine, but I don't see CHI's priority for cap dumps being 3rds or later.... .

I'm sure CHI will have their cap situation figured out and their roster pretty much set by September.

mid round picks are still very valuable. They can potentially get three picks in the 65-122 range, while saving $5M in real cash. And not only Chicago, but teams like Anaheim, San Jose and Arizona will be salivating over this deal as well. Owners hate taking out their wallet during the rebuild phase. I can't see a world where any one of these 4 teams decline, especially if the Canucks leak the deal to the owners of these teams

free picks is free picks, if paying $1M in real cash gets you three picks in the 65-122 range, you can't say no

Great, I'm sure Anaheim, San Jose or that crazy cheap owner in Arizona will be very happy to hear that! Davidson will be the first GM in NHL history to decline three 65-122 picks for only $1M in real cash while rebuilding. If anything, this was an overpay for Vancouver.

First off, that is only TWO picks. And, no, he wouldn't be the first. All I'm saying is our roster and cap situation will already be figured out by the time Myers bonus is paid in September. And, yes, it is paid in September. Don't ask me why his contract was structured that way instead of July like most normal signing bonuses. VAN will have missed the boat dumping him to CHI by then. So go ahead, find another team to take him.

You’re forgetting dollar bill is no longer the owner and the bonus basically won’t cut any money off the salary cap is what you said so that’s a no
