Description
Just exploring a couple trades inspired by Briere's trade with Columbus and Los Angeles.

Did a roster but I would expect Vancouver to move a winger this offseason as well. I didn't do it as it's not the point of this AGM.

Détails additionnels:
This doesn't have to be Detroit. I just picked a random team but it would have to be a team that can afford, have a need and that Karlsson would waive to which I'm sure are limited.
DET
  1. Karlsson, Erik (2 000 000 $ retained)

VAN
So Vancouver dumps OEL, if he waives obviously, for a top 5 Protected 1st next year and 2M retention on Karlsson's contract. The term is the same so Vancouver saves 5.26M for the next 4 years. They don't move #11 this year and they are expected to be a better team next season.
    SJS
    1. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (BOS)
    2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2025 (DET)
    Détails additionnels:
By San Jose taking on OEL in order to get them to retain, they get a roster player, who may not be great but fills a spot for them and they ideally get to maximize on a Karlsson trade by getting more value for him at around 7.5M instead of 9.5.

The return isn't really important here as I have no idea what a trade for Karlsson would be like considering his age and NMC. I just randomly picked Detroit and two firsts in the future for reference.
    4.
    VAN
    1. Ferraro, Mario
    Détails additionnels:
Maybe Ferraro gets added into this trade so Vancouver has a defenceman coming back.

They could also add someone like Graves, Gostisbehere, Soucy or Orlov via free agency. I would expect a trade like this to happen in the offseason so likely they already have one signed and if not maybe they make a deal with Ferraro in it or similar.

So Vancouver gets two first for Karlsson while the Sharks get a random 1st and a cap dump on one of the worst contracts in the league. Pretty easy decline here.

I might be looking at it wrong but I think San Jose actually ends up getting all 3 1sts. The Canucks send their 1st to dump OEL, and then retain 2M on Karlsson and the picks that Detroit is giving up actually go to San Jose

I'm guessing you don't know how to read even though you know how to type? I stated in the trade that the return isn't the important thing just the idea. I'm all reality I don't think Karlsson gets much more than that. It's 3 1sts but they have to take OEL. If you think they aren't taking some sort of bad money back in any deal you are kidding yourself. Karlsson with his NMC has the day off the destination, which also was stated and was stated that Detroit was just a placeholder team.

It's 3 1sts actually. I don't know what you think Karlsson will return with his NMC but you might be disappointed. They basically gave Burns away, now Karlsson just had an unreal season but can he repeat that? Always risk with him. Also if you think you aren't taking bad money back in a deal for Karlsson you are probably mistaken. The term is the same, he's still a decent player just overpaid by like 3-4M. Also if you read the description I stated the return isn't the important thing and Detroit was just a placeholder since they have an opening at RD and have the cap space.

SJ will hold onto EK if the best they can get is a mid 24' 1st top5 protect, late 24' 1st, presumably mid to late 25' 1st and OEL+2% on EK's contract. There would simply have to be more involved, probably prospects, or better picks.

This isn't a Burns trade situation whatsoever...

But that's not a horrible offer for Ferraro. I think SJ would want sooner picks but anything that has at least a 2nd involved is a ballpark offer

Honestly the value wasn't what I was going for here, more the idea of the trade. Also it's really tough to gauge the value of Karlsson with his NMC to be honest. The right team with the cap that he accepts to is actually really hard in this cap age here.
Also yes I'm a wings fan but honestly they are best fit for this scenario. Vacant 2RD spot, cap space and a defensively responsible partner in Maatta.

Interesting trade concept. This might be the sort of dynamic of a trade that would allow/require SJ to move Karlsson and maximize their return.

I could see it maybe including more? But, getting three (3) 1st round picks and taking back a bad contract albeit a serviceable player who could be useful on a very young rebuilding team does make a lot of sense.

As for the Red Wings (or whichever receiving team) I’d want more retention than that - I’d even pay more to achieve that. If Vancouver (who should also be rebuilding) was willing to go 50% retention, I’d giving up the two 1sts, maybe two 2nds and a few middle picks for a $4.5m Erik Karlsson.

    Karlsson's cap hit 11.5M x 4 years.
After this deal the cap hit for OEL and retention is 9.33M over 4 years.
Also worth noting that Karlsson is owed $39M in salary over the rest of his contract. Total salary of OEL and retention is $32.54M. Almost $6.5M in savings. Also worth noting, not including this season but the two seasons prior they had a $-66M operating income. So I think it's fair to say, considering they are going to be rebuilding and ticket sales will be low, that's a nice chunk of money to save.

The idea is to potentially maximize on a trade for Karlsson. Who in the league has a need, can afford his cap, has the trade assets and is a team he would waive to? Grier said he would only retain 18% so that pretty much leaves Karlsson's cap hit at 9.5M. Gaining that extra 2M or so is huge. So many factors involving a Karlsson trade that they will need to get creative if they want any sort of return.
For the extra retention I tried to make it not too crazy. But maybe 2.5-3M would be possible.

You want to look at the trades again. Van sends the other two firsts to San Jose.

    It goes like this

    SJ in:
    OEL
