I seem to recall a very similar premise back in 2015: supposedly Columbus offered every pick they had in that draft to the Oilers for the chance to draft McDavid.
It'll be interesting to see how Bedard turns out over his career: I'm expecting him to be a Kane clone essentially (maybe a mini-Matthews?) because I actually cannot fathom any other player being as good as McDavid. I just don't see it in Bedard's size and skating. Bedard clearly has an NHL-level shot and decent footspeed but year over year McDavid keeps raising his own bar. I get that this may upset the Chicago faithful but if you run an NHLe translation on Auston Matthews' D-1 and D0 seasons (USHL+NTDP and NLA to WHL), he outpaces the production of both Bedard and McDavid in both years. We haven't seen that level of sustained "I'm better than you" in the NHL. McDavid was built in a lab to be good at one thing only.
