Description
The Leafs have an opportunity this summer to accumulate draft picks by trading away Brodie and Nylander, both of whom have one year left and likely won't be re-signed next year. With Treliving's decent drafting history, especially early on in his role as GM of the Flames, it would make sense for the Leafs to start adding more prospects. Dubas drafted well with the picks he had but there aren't enough high-end prospects in the system. Since Matthews and Marner are still young, there is no need to rush. Stanley cup teams are built at the draft table, not at free agency or the trade deadline. Vegas is a special exception.

I agree with trading those guys away. One problem is the human side of things. Treliving traded Brodie away from Calgary so I’m not sure he will want to do it to the guy again. But who knows. Also, I’d stay away from Kane.

I don't think the UFA rights for either guy would be that much.

This UFA class is weak, and these two are impactful top six forwards. If a team really wants one of these guys it could happen.

Pens decline. Unless it’s a sign and trade where the pens get the 8th year in the contract, they don’t take that chance and just wait til free agency. Honestly, even with the 8th year they’d have no reason to do it. If the core was still in their prime and gonna play for 8 more years then maybe, but they aren’t.

RoR is an option for Colorado for sure, but I dont think they need a head start on those conversations

Yeah but when UFA rights are traded the guys are game changers or the picks are low. A 3rd would be for a guy like Matthews, not Bunting

this was a sign and trade. For the second time ever. NJ was more involved than just UFA rights. It's just not the same

Buffalo declines, Brodie isn’t bad but we have zero reason to give you that much for him.

Neither are that vital of acquisitions for the respective teams. ROR is good but he’s old and is unlikely to be seen as a top tier UFA.

Bunting is good but not 3rd rounder to talk good. Severson was considered the best dman on the market by a margin and thus NJ could use that. Bunting and ROR don’t exist in a similar position

Your logic escapes me, any player picked in this year’s or next year’s draft is 3-5 years away from having a significant impact at nhl level. Matthew’s will be 30, Marner 31 & Reilly 34. Ridiculous, every team needs prospects but when you are a contender - you don’t trade away valuable roster pieces to build up your prospect pool 🤦🏻

You want Nylander and Brodie to walk for nothing next season? I think this is better asset management. And if a draft goes well, it won't take 3-5 years. Knies was selected in the 2021 draft and he's probably on the 1st line next year. Leafs need more young guys on ELCs.

Brodie is 33; yes - let him walk or sign him to a spezza like extension. You want to trade Matthews or Marner (next year)? Who says Willy is going to walk? There could be a deal signed July 1; neither of us know but I do know trading them both makes us a worse team next year which is my top priority

I don't think this team has a chance of winning if all three of Nylander, Marner and Matthews are kept. The money has to be spread around to have a more balanced roster. Matthews and Marner are impossible to replace so they should stay long-term, but Nylander is more replaceable.

As for Brodie, his game has dropped off significantly. I can see Treliving trading him this summer.

The cap will be $87.5 M in 24-25, even higher year after when JT comes off the books. No guarantees, but they can absolutely win with those 3

With the Avs being as light on picks as they are I think they'll wait and take their chances on ROR's availability.

Brodie wasn't traded he left in free agency. Treliving may not have an issue with trading him now.
