I do like this Nylander trade though and its a lot easier for the Canes cap. To get Necas and Pesce back improves the overall balance of the line-up imo

It has come up from many different legit sources. Howard Berger, Paul Bissonnette etc. Marner has 2 years left on his deal and his cap hit is not bad at all. He's probably the best playmaker in the NHL not named McDavid.

So you haven’t named one legit source and they all are regurgitating each other. In fact all the legitimate sources are saying the big 4 aren’t moving.
Also for a team expecting to have very little available cap space in 24-25, a 11 million cap hit is in fact too much.

Marner is a great player but we can’t extend him at the trade. So we run the risk of losing him for nothing and we can’t afford him in year 2 anyways.

Because we don't want to give up the farm for somebody who wasn't been able elevate his team

I like Nylander as a Hurricane more than Marner. Here’s why;

I think he’s a better goal scorer
He’s still an ample playmaker
He can play center in a pinch to fill in for injuries
He only has one year on his deal which affords the opportunity to talk extension talks on July 1 - ideally before a deal is made
He looked to be the better playoff performer the past few years
He has a much lower AAV this year which allows canes to further utilize cap space they have this year for more depth.

That said - the deal mentioned isn’t good for the Canes. Moving Necas or Pesce is fine, but I can’t envision the Canes moving both.

Simplify this - just go Necas & Skjei for Nylander. Canes will pickup the extra AAV difference to make it cap neutral.

First off no chance Pesce signs 6x$6 😂; 4x$4.5 maybe. Dude doesn’t score and moneypuck just tweeted d pair stats during playoffs - he / Skjei were 20th of 20 so his defensive prowess is overrated.

Lollll at that Pesce offer. 6x6 is about right for him, but you would have to look at a bigger picture than a 15 game sample for that

All I hear is that the leafs can win in reg season but choke in playoffs. Same can be says for canes apparently and Pesce is at the top of the list; we don’t need help to win in the season and won’t be shelling $6M for guy that doesn’t produce offensively + gets caved in during playoffs.

One half of the Worst defensive pairing in the playoffs; that’s quite a one off (if it even is). Lots of Leaf rumours floating around, I wouldn’t believe 99% of them - Willy was never on the block during Dubas’ era; it’s not but certainly would have been one of the worst trades in leafs history if it had happened

Who said bottom tier? And it isn’t one tweet - it’s advanced stat breakdown of d pairings during current playoffs. Can’t hide from the facts. I simply am stating he doesn’t produce offensively and he’s coming off playoffs where he was very, very bad defensively. So was TJ Brodie (& I love Brodie) but I certainly wouldn’t state he’s signing for 2x$6M (difference in their ages) 🤷🏻

Open the sample size up to more than just the playoffs.

It’s also interesting that the Canes were able to make it to the ECF while having the worst defensive pairing in hockey playing a TON of mins against the other teams best forward lines.

If you don’t like Pesce because he doesn’t score - Skjei was top 5 goal scoring D man in the league and has one of the better 5v5 scoring rates across all defenseman over the last two years.
