Pass on that Canes deal.

Would rather have jarvis than one year of Toffoli and a pick

The canes wouldn’t trade Jarvis for an expiring UFA and a round jump in draft where the players will likely be the same quality.

I’m always confused by posts that think the Canes are going to trade Jarvis. They wouldn’t do it for Meier, why would they do it at all. You can make the argument that he’s been the best forward for the canes this post season. Wouldn’t be unheard of for him to produce close 60-70 points in just 3rd season at age 23.

I don't care what that hack AP says. Trading 3 OA for a soon to be 29 year old Lindholm that needs an extension and significant pay raise would be the dumbest **** ever.

I agree. But most NHL teams are dumb. Maybe CBJ wants to right the ship quicker while Johnny is there and bring in his old pal in Lindholm

The Pens don't really need Vladar, and there are better options even if they do look for a new goalie.

I mean I would say that's a bit of a jump considering he had a decrease in production this season. Personally I wouldn't make the deal either but Marek and Friedge have mentioned Toffoli with Carolina before and maybe they'll feel pressure after getting smoked in the ECF once again.

I'd follow this line of thinking as possible had Jarmo not already said verbatim that it would take a U25 1C that they can sign to a long term deal in order to move 3 OA. JD has been repeatedly saying they're going to be drafting a center at 3. They're far too excited about picking a young top center to trade the pick away for anything less.

I'm at a loss to understand the theory behind the Hurricanes deal, because it's worse than it looks.

From Carolina's point of view, this is exchanging the 13th overall pick in 2020 for the 16th overall pick in 2023, while getting one year of Tyler Toffoli but losing a bottom second this June.

Putting aside the question of whether one season of Tyler Toffoli is worth that second when their difficulty this month has been due to injuries and not roster strength, that seems like a really poor idea just on the time factor alone, never mind the fact that Jarvis has already proven himself a quality NHL player and that as-yet-undrafted 2023 selection hasn't.

And the Columbus idea is out-of-this-world bad.

Main *Athletic* reporter that often contradicts the word from the team and is consistently scooped by national reporters. AP is a horrid writer who I think Jarmo specifically despises.

After Carlson's performance at the Worlds there's no chance, would need to be a piece much more valuable than Lindholm who's a 2C on a contending team. Don't listen to everything reporters say, half of it is bull to get readers.

Toffoli makes a ton of sense, trading Jarvis doesn’t.

Sure it would be a jump - but I don’t think it’s that far fetched to think a 22 year old kid who’s still on his ELC could make a jump in his Junior season. How many 22 year olds have played 28 playoff games already? He actually has a higher PPG in the playoffs than the regular season.

Do the 2020 draft over again and it’s not far fetched to think Jarvis is taken as high as 6 to Ducks or 7 to NJ.

I can’t think of a less-Canes like trade than this.

Long shot, but do you think Columbus would be willing to trade the third overall pick to Calgary for Lindholm+? Columbus thought they’d be good last year but were destroyed by injuries and having Johnny Gaudreau’s solid center in the fold might be attractive (especially since they both had career years together). Calgary gets a chance at a potential top center (Smith, Carlsson), a potential top defenseman (Reinbacher), or the long-term potential of Michkov. What would the + have to be to make this happen? — Guy D.

I consulted my friend and colleague Aaron Portzline for this question. Here’s what Aaron had to say:

In order to say what the “+” needs to be worth, we’d first have to establish how the players mentioned in the trade compare. Certainly, with the No. 3 pick, there’s some uncertainty, even though this is regarded as a strong draft through the top four or five picks. But there’d be uncertainty for the club acquiring Lindholm, too, because he’s an unrestricted free agent after next season. He’s eligible to sign an extension, and that would be absolutely key for Columbus. If he’s not willing to sign an extension, I don’t think the Blue Jackets would trade the No. 3 pick straight up for Lindholm. In fact, I know they wouldn’t. If he does sign an extension, it’s a trade the Blue Jackets could get pretty excited about, as Lindholm is not only in his prime (28) but has shown previous success with Gaudreau. We’ve seen their chemistry. It’s pretty impressive. So, if Lindholm were to sign an extension, I don’t think the “+” would have to be that massive. Lindholm (with a multi-year extension) and a 2023 second-round pick for the No. 3? — Portzline
