Description
I hear of all people Bowman and Trevling are going to be front runners. I fully expect the next GM to "make his mark" by trading one of Marner or Nylander and will do so before July 1 and before Matthews resigns. This will lead to an exodus that the team won't recover from.

I hope I am wrong but this is the sort of nonsense I expect.

I mean, if and when CHI GM consider Jones to be a "true No. 1 D-man", which he probably does...why would he do this? Trading 7 years of top pair D to a pending UFA winger makes no sense from their perspective.

Because he knows he's not a #1 damn and Nylander would likely see the chance of playing with Bedard a good reason to resign.

Doubt it. They paid so much for Jones he's been revered as number one despite not being one. Kinda like Darnell Nurse.

It was Bowman who made the deal yes, but if I recall correctly, Davidson has also referred to him as one of the untouchables when rebuilding that core.

Then it'll be Parayko or someone other defenceman nearing 30 and with major term.

Chicago wouldnt do this, but future cap flexability could be seen as a plus on this deal. You shed Jones' contract and take on a UFA and a Goaltender for 2 years left. Opens up you salary for when the hawks are in their competitive window. If they believe they have the #1 defensemen in their system already to replace him, would be about your only option to shed that contract.

At this point there cap hit won doesn't mean a lick since CHI is a cap minimum team...and all that money saved from trading Jones would be spent on re-signing Nylander. They can't afford lose both in the long-term, considering how much they invested in Jones.

But if you dont resign Nylander, and you just wash your hands of everyone, then you have cap flexability. Not saying its the right choice, but similar thinking to VGK trading Fleury for nothing. Cap space has value.

Murray has 1 year left. Basically you get Nylander who you would resign and jettison the ridiculous Jones deal.

I would think getting out from Jones deal would be terrific. And if you can't resign Nylander you get more assets for him when you trade him as a rental.

Jones is still a good D-man, albeit overpaid. The fact they gave up David Jiricek, Adam Boqvist and Cole Sillinger for him speaks volumes as to how deep they are with him. He's going nowhere, especially for a pending UFA.

And you also gave out Jiricek, Sillinger and Boqvist for absolutely nothing.

That's some nonsense right there. You turned those guys into Nylander or whatever you flip Nylander for. And let's be honest for a second, even as a rental at the deadline, Nylander would bring back some major assets in return. How often does a point a game star in his prime go at the deadline?

Right back at you - how often does a D in his prime with 7 years left get moved for a pending UFA winger?

I won't deny Nylander's better than Jones, but the whole concept is flawed, for it will be a net loss for Chicago regardless. And they will no doubt value Jones more than a pending UFA winger, much like you do given that you suggested this trade, as well as suggested trading him for Parayko as well.

Personally, I think Nylander is better than all of them and Toronto should not be moving him. But in general I don't see CHI moving Jones unless the deal is something they absolutely can't refuse, and a pending UFA winger and a cap dump goalie is not it.

But you can maximize the value out of the assets you've got. Trading Jones for Nylander makes sense in a vacuum since Nylander is the superior player of the two, but due to circumstances involved it would be a huge loss in the long run if you lose everything you had (first the assets you used to get Jones, then trading Jones for a guy that would leave only a year later).

The difference is Jones sucks. I made this trade because it's terrible for TO. Not because I think Jones is good. TO loses the trade, wreck their cap.

I shouldn't say he sucks. He doesn't suck, if he made 6 million it wouldn't be a bad contract, too long still but not terrible.

But his cap hit with his term, it's a terrible contract.
