He is signed in Russia until 2026. If a team like Buffalo is trading up to get the pick to take him, they would want a player like that in the organization now, not in 3 years.

Lafreniere was a potential franchise player too. I wouldn’t give up the first round pick for him now. Sure, the trade may not be enough. But it’s a lot for a team that’s trying to contend now and not actually get anything that will help them now. Whoever picks him has to wait three years to get him. They know that going in. Three years can feel like an eternity, whether your team is terrible, or trying to contend, and this potential Star is still years away.
