All the right moves

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
1) Trade down if you can get 2 x 1st round picks in the top 20
2) Draft Reinbacher at 9. If he's gone draft Dvorsky. (Organizational need for RHD meets BPA)
3) Draft Wood, Danielson, or Barlow at 17 (Organizational need for Skill & Size combination meets BPA)
4) Draft Hrabal with Florida pick. If he's gone draft BPA (Purely organizational need for Goalie)
5) Sign CC to a "prove it" deal. Give him 3 x 7. If he does well, he'll get his money one way or the other
6) Trade futures for a top 6 player, with skill & size combination, who can be under team control through the rebuild (PLD, Laf, Kakko, Nylander, Keller, etc.)
7) Ensure Hoffman, Pitlick, Armia and Wideman are no where near the NHL team next season. Trade-em, Bury-em, Buy-em out... Whatever you need to do to give those slots to up and coming players, or players with more grit. It's not about a good financial decision, it's about building a culture of "no passengers" up and down the lineup
8) Hold Eddy until the TDL. If we are somehow in the playoff picture, keep him, otherwise trade him to try and maximize return
9) Make Roy, Heineman, Farrell play in the AHL for a full season, but call them up if the team needs a spark or in case of injuries

I love that trade as a wings fan. Tough call if both Michkov and Carlsson are still there, but I'd probably still lean Michkov.

Habs already have a lot of depth in their prospect pool, it makes no sense to pass on possible franchise superstar Matvei Michkov for some more depth pieces.

Other than Bedard and maybe Fantilli, Michkov is clearly the best player and we would be fools to trade that pick.

Every day I see mock trades of our 1rst going to WSH or DET and I dont understand why you guys are so addemint to trading it. Can someone explain?

Zero chance PLD is moved for cap dumps and assorted garbage. 30 other teams easily best that.

If the Wings can move into the top 5 with their 2 firsts I think they have to do that. If I'm Stevie I'd take that deal

Depends on if the Habs believe in Michkov.

1) No one can scout him in person
2) No one really understands the situation with his emotional well-being. Was his father killed to keep him in line?
3) No one knows if the Russian government will allow him to leave, even 3 years from now. It's clearly is tied to the war. They imprisoned Brittney Griner to make a point. I would not put anything past them

On top of the usual risks you take with a player who is never guaranteed to develop, you have these geo-political ones.

Your perspective that we have depth is not actually true. We have a lot of "maybes" but not a lot of "sure things". Not all of our maybes will work out.

Mailloux might not work out and we have 0 other RHD prospects of note.
Dobes might not work out and we have 0 other Goalie prospects of note.

Farrell/Roy/Mesar might not work out and even if they do, they are all relatively small body forwards.

My plan is to draft best RHD available, a forward with top 6 upside who has size and skill, and the best Goalie available in the draft.

Not every move has to be a swing for the fences move.

i understand where your coming from but your argument that the prospect listed might not work out can just be used to not trade down and trade quantity over quality also. Chances are very solid that out of Farrell Roy Mesar Beck Kidney we will have atleast 2 that pan out as expected if not more. Mailloux Hutson Struble will most likely produce 2 nhl defenceman, Based on predraft ranking we will probably be able to snag the best ranked goalie in the draft with Floridas first, unless we trade it, and if we do then still an option in the second round but again goaltending prospect is an even bigger maybe, many dont pan out and there could be several opportunity in the trade market to acquire our next number 1 goalie.

To me the upside of drafting the best play at number 5 outweighs the benefit of hedging your bet and moving down to accumulate more maybes.

Would Detroit do Lucas Raymond and Sebastian Cossa for #5 overall?
Would something need to be added?
Should Montreal accept Raymond & Cossa for #5?

No way DET does that. They need to add to Raymond and Cossa, not use them as bait. Quickest way to kill your pipeline.

Fair. I was just wondering.

I just created a separate ACGM post about this to see what others would say.

I think DET would trade 9 and 17 for 5, but it wouldn't be for Michkov. Yes, Steve drafted Kuch, but he took that risk in the 2nd round, not in the top 5. Kuch ended up coming over to the Q, and then into the NHL. Michkov won't be able to do that (at least not to the Q). Vas was taken in the later 1st, with a 2nd first round pick (thanks to DET).

But, when he made those moves, there was no war with Ukraine, sanctions, etc. The risks were much smaller than they were today. If DET stands pat, and Michkov is there at 17, then you might consider it (a la Vas). Steve needs to come out of this draft with at least 1 piece to add to Seider, Raymond, Cossa, Evidsson, and Kasper.

Appreciate the response.

I'm not a fan of playing LHD on the right side... It's really hard to trade for a player like Reinbacher and Hutson Struble are LHD.

Farrell, Roy, Mesar, Beck, Kidney... There is a lot of skill in that group, but not a lot of size. That is why I want the Habs to target Wood, Danielson, or Barlow. We don't have any notable forward prospects, other than Slaf and Heineman, who are above 6'.

I agree with you on the Goalies.

Look at how Suzuki/Caufield/Guhle are working out. There are 1st line talents available 10-20 in this draft. The idea of losing the year if it doesn't work out with Michkov could be much worse for the rebuild. So you have to put a percentage on it. If you think there is a 95% chance Michkov comes over in 2026, ok draft Michkov. I personally see it as 50/50 right now. If I get different information, I will change my assessment, but I would not draft any Russian players until 1 year after the war is over.
