I would say the return for Matthews is far more. Just consider the prospects involved and you can see that

JT Miller is not worth his contract. Giving anything up for him is a horrible plan. Stop pretending to be a Leafs fan. Only a Canuck fan would post something like this.

This gets rid of a one of your several terrible contracts. Hughes and Petterson would see this as a huge step towards being a contender. Any short term step back would be followed by major steps forward. Minten is going to be a very good player.

If Matthews is going to sign a 7-year contract for 2024 through 2032, he's probably just as likely to sign that contract in 2024 as he is in 2023. We'll wait until then and keep all of those quality supporting pieces -- quality supporting pieces whose lack is exactly why Toronto can't go deep into the playoffs.
