Retooling the Capitals

Description
I tried my best to retool the Caps. They are in a tough position, but I think this is a team that’s competitive and can win now and make the most of Ovi’s years

Also that top line of Ovi-Strome-Bratt will help the Russian future HOFer reach his goal mark quicker.

1.
WSH
  1. Foudy, Liam
  2. Svozil, Stanislav
  3. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (CBJ)
Détails additionnels:
Liam Foudy is a bottom six role player who is a letdown of a first round pick by Columbus. With the youth coming up, Foudy seems expendable.

Svozil is the real get here. He put a ppg in the WHL last year for the Regina Pats. He’s a puckmoving LHD and is one of the better D prospects in the Jackets system.
CBJ
  1. Carlsson, Gabriel [Droits de RFA]
  2. Kuznetsov, Evgeny
Détails additionnels:
I got a feeling Kuzi is going to give you a lot lesser of a return than one might like. This reminds me of the Brent Burns situation.

He is a good player, but his cap hit is way too high. Washington needs that cap flexibility to fill out the wings and McMichael is a natural center.

I could see salary retained, but nothing more than 25%
2.
WSH
  1. Basse, Dominic [Liste de réserve]
Détails additionnels:
He is currently the 4th best goalie prospect in the Blackhawks system.

Behind Soderblom, Stauber and Commesso. He had a solid last season in the NCAA and offers intriguing upside. Also, he has yet to sign with the Hawks.
CHI
  1. Mantha, Anthony
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2025 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:

3.
WSH
  1. Bratt, Jesper [Droits de RFA]
NJD
  1. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:
I saw this on a Caps ACGM and I agree with the trade value.

This obviously comes with an extension. Lastly, I will say this. If Jersey wants Lapierre as well in the deal, I’d package him into the deal.

Bratt makes Washington competitive again and top six wingers have a price. If Washington doesn’t get a top six winger, they probably don’t make the playoffs again in Ovi’s career.
4.
BOS
  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (BOS)
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2025 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:
I like the addition of Taylor Hall. I think Boston is really going to want to bring Bertuzzi back. DeBrusk isn’t getting moved and makes Taylor Hall the cap casualty.

Now if Hall is the off the table, I’d go after Bunting or Barbashev in the FA market.

I doubt that gets Hall. If they move Hall to sign Bertuzzi for same AAV they are dumb.

I’ve seen ACGMs where Hall is cheaper. I tried to my best to go in the middle of the trade offers. The reality is when you’re in a cap crunch, the price goes down unfortunately. Also, it doesn’t necessarily have to be Hall. The money equivalent needs to be there to pay for LW2.

Thank you for reading my post and I appreciate the feedback!

Fun fact. Lapierre and Mercer were linemates in the Q back in their junior days. When Mercer got drafted, he said he was happy for his friend (Lapierre) who was drafted 4 picks later.

cbj not trading Svozil

Well Washington needs defense prospects, who will you deal.

You have Jirecek (off the table), Mateychuk (off the table) Ceulemans (1st rd pick in ‘21), Svozil, and Knazko. If Washington is only getting a third round pick and a fourth liner, they need a little more of a return, wouldn’t you agree? Plus, Kuzi will be your 1C immediately. There is no guarantee Svozil makes the NHL or reach the same level of echelon of players Kuzi is/was in.

Hawks probably consider this. Basse is a good prospect, but with 3 other young goalies aged 24 or less under contract, I wonder if he sees his path to the NHL being blocked and he doesn't sign next summer.

I agree. I think Basse played himself into the possibility of having an NHL career, especially with how good of a season he had in the NCAA. I think he’s expendable, given how far down he is in the depth chart has yet to sign an entry level contract with the Hawks. Could hang on to him, but also risk losing him for nothing.

I remember when the Devils lost Kerfoot’s rights for nothing given the center depth chart (for context, Devils just drafted Hischier No.1 OVR and took their 3rd center in a row w/ their first round pick). Consider taking the pick and a bad contract, put him on Bedard’s line and flip him at the deadline for more futures. Washington at least gets a project player who has a long road to the NHL.

Basse has taken the exact trajectory you want a 6th round pick to take - improved every year since he was drafted.

If Hawks end up w/ Mantha, I don't see him w/ Bedard. More likely on 2nd RW w/ Reichel on LW and whoever the C is.

everything is a little more to give up then I would like but really well thought out and definitely addresses all of their needs. I still think they end up buying out Mantha instead of attaching a 2nd to him, and from what BMac has said it seems like all futures are on the table for a player like Bratt except 8oa. Also, Basse is from the DC area and played for Team Maryland growing up

Yea, I tried to put myself in the Caps shoes. They lack a star winger, they are one of the older teams in the NHL and are in need better role players. I put in quite a bit of research and tried to make an ACGM that helps the Caps compete now, while also adding prospects who are near NHL ready. Having a log jam at center, a bad winger contract while also being up against the cap makes this a very difficult task.

Lastly, you would also think recent first round picks like Alexeyev, McMichael and Lapierre would start making an impact on the roster, but that has yet to materialize. Thank you Ivan Miroshnichenko for dropping in the draft. He will be NHL ready in a season or two.

Edit: Also, I tried to make realistic trades and use trade comps for every deal I put forth. Most of these ACGM trades are very one sided and I have been a victim of this as well.

Sure. So upgrade the picks. And leave Gabe Carlsson out: Jarmo’s been there, non-tendered that already. Part of Svozil’s value is that he’ll be cheap when he arrives as a full time NHLer (hopefully), which will be after Sillinger and Johnson are getting paid and probably the season before Jiricek is. too. Columbus isn’t running a defensive prospect charity for franchises who didn’t plan better.

Firstly, I was under the impression Columbus didn’t really want to deal their picks. That can always be adjusted. Secondly, you shouldn’t have to apologize for the prospect pool you built. It’s very impressive, especially the defense. You do realize that not all of your prospects are going to be on the Jackets, right.

So what do you think of trading your fifth best d prospect in Knazko (your third best LHD) instead and CBJ 2nd instead of Svozil and CBJ 3rd

I put Gabe Carlsson as the Lane Pederson part of the Burns trade fwiw. I’ll take him off no worries.
