Get to learn the new prospects
I honestly don’t think this is a fleece by Carolina. The Canes have one of the better prospect pools in the league and they are one of the few contenders that can leverage their pool instead of sending 1sts. Ever since Don Waddell became GM of the Hurricanes, they’ve never parted with 1sts, unless it’s for controllable players (Skjei, KK) and they’re so good at drafting they don’t have to and are able to get creative.
From a Pens perspective, you have a bottom 5 prospect pool and you’re trying to retool, not rebuild. Players, prospects > picks. I like to think of it as Guentzel getting 2 2nd Round Picks (one being conditional 1st) an early 3rd and a late 3rd, early 4th. These three prospects will all be in Pittsburgh’s Top 5 and all have a legitimate chance at being in the NHL. Getting a 2nd, B+, B, and B-/C+ + prospect isn’t shabby.

This Season is Cooked

If Henrique can get a 1st, and Mantha gets a 2nd and 4th, Toffoli can absolutely fetch a 1 with salary retained. He’s on pace for 30+ goals. Those players don’t grow on trees and he’s a postseason warrior. Also, Tank (rental) went for a 1st+ in the ‘23 deadline.

I think he could be a 2nd line center, I think 3C is probably what he is at this point. Still fills a need for NJ since we don’t have right handed center man other than Lazar. Feel like Holtz needs a McLeod replacement and this could be the guy

Toffoli is yours. We get an early 2nd and Lucius would be our Top Center prospect. Could be a great 3C, a lock for a 4C

I’d do whatever it takes to get Cole Perfetti or Brad Lambert but I’m assuming they are off the board.
Does a 2025 1st OR 2024 MTL 2nd + Lucius work for Toffoli? I’m not familiar with Jets prospects. I don’t think we could get Stanley/Heinola and Lucius and the pick, I feel like that’s too much.

Next season after getting Toffoli at the 2024 deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CM_Insane</b></div><div>If someone wants to pay him Horvat money he's gone pretty much. I do think something around Kadri he could be re-signed. But not if we are bringing Toffoli in other issue is we keep making our defense worse which doesn't make sense. Unless the front office is happy with Wolanin or Hirose (eventhough I do think D-Petey will convert to NA game pretty fast still will need sometime to get used to it). Plus I don't think they want Podkolzin on the 4th line as that was what caused his confidence issue to begin with.</div></div>
That makes sense, especially since it’s a cap league after all. There is money coming off the books, but also the OEL buyout will eventually sting a bit. Regardless, I hope you all go the distance. Your city needs a deep playoff run.

We are pretty much in agreement. My bar of satisfaction is set on if the Devils get the 1st and a controllable player who could be on the third or fourth line

How much for Toffoli
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>alwaysnextyear</b></div><div>If the deal can be done without retention straight up for the 2025 1st that would be preferable for VAN, assuming they can LTIR Myers until the playoffs.</div></div>
For sure, but I think the Devils will retain so they can get the best return possible. A 1st is going back to the Devils no matter what, but it’s that second piece (whether it’s a young controllable B6 player or B/C prospect) that will ultimately decide where Toffoli goes. At least half a dozen teams (the known ones are Vegas, Edmonton and LA Kings have checked in on him) will be bidding for Toffoli and he has zero trade protection.

Toffoli (50% retained) = 2025 1st + Pick One from This Group of Players (Pods, Raty, D-Petey)
If Hoglander is up, I really like him, but it wouldn’t make sense to make him available. Lekkermaki and Willander are off the board no matter what. I’m sure you could also use Colin Millers services. He’s worth a 4th.

I thought of Blackwell, but I didn’t know where exactly to send him. Probably a fringe playoff contender for a 5th makes sense. I think this is the first year where Chicago isn’t going to send off potential core pieces for more futures. Imo, I think they keep Raddysh and they will need to trade one of the LHD (anyone not named Korchinski) to clear a logjam.

No problem! I think Toffoli is one of the final pieces that’s going to take you on a deep run. He is built for the playoffs and Edmonton needs guys like him. I wish we could’ve kept him in NJ, but our season is cooked.

Devils accept. Even if Graeme Clarke was thrown in and Bourgault is taken out of the trade, we still accept.
Feel like the best return for Toffoli (50% retained) is 1st, Broberg, and Ceci as the cap dump.

If the Devils could get a 1st (doesn’t matter which year) and ONE of (Raty, Pods, D-Petey), he’s yours. I’d do a 2nd or 3rd and Hoglander as well.

Or maybe Miromanov (if they aren’t extending, will be UFA).</div></div>
It would be, it’s looking like a sellers market. I don’t know much about Brisson other than he is one of their better prospects, but not the best. If we could get Edstrom, that would be ideal, but he’s their best guy and has the most promising NHL future.

I like the fit. I think it’s a pretty fair trade for the most part.
Toffoli = 1st
Miller = 3rd OR 4th
I just don’t know if NJ uses their last two retention slots in one trade. It’s more likely the return is a 1st, B/C prospect OR U25 B6 player, and cap dump for Toffoli. If the Devils were able to return any of your 1sts + Broberg or Holloway, the Devils would gladly use both retention slots, throw in Graeme Clarke and take a cap dump of your choice (not Jack Campbell).
