Los Angeles knows exactly what they have with Danault and Kempe -- a playoff team. Trading them away for futures doesn't elevate the Kings to "serious contender" -- if anything, it postpones the team from arriving there. And the twelfth overall pick, even in this draft, isn't likely to have as positive an effect as either Danault or Kempe, never mind the time consideration. In short, Guenther doesn't equal Kempe and the Ottawa first doesn't equal Danault, and even if they did, it wouldn't happen until 2025-2026 at the earliest. If you don't believe me, you don't have to look any farther than Anton Lundell, who's an excellent player.
The players that Los Angeles needs for the near future -- LhDs and a first-class goalie prospect -- will be available in the second half of the first round. THAT's where the Kings should be focusing their efforts to acquire a draft pick.
