Why on earth would Washington do this?

I guess the Canucks take that. Not too keen on retaining to move OEL, due to the length of the contract and amount that would have to be retained. However, OEL is due $7 mil and if we only retain $2.5 mil we can get a better player with the remaining $4.5 mil. No increase in the overall cap hit combining a $4.5 mil player plus OEL's $2.5 mil retention, but we get a better player plus add a good winger in Duclair for a 3rd.

OEL is hot garbage. Obviously we'd bite their hand off to take this. I'd retain 50% gladly to move the guy out for nothing in return. Its better than the buyout that is coming.

Did you miss that the Caps signed Kuemper to a 5 year deal last summer? On the list of the worst possible fits for the Caps, Bob would have to be pretty damn near the top.
