Why would the Devils trade a young star winger for an aging and overpaid LHD when they have Siegenthaler, Hughes and Bahl already?

CHI rips your nipples off and slaps you with a dead fish and then says "Bet you never saw that coming.". Then they hang up, leaving you wondering how they ripped your nipples off and slapped you with a fish through the phone.

Hawks decline. No need for Murray. Different story last off-season where they needed a goalie. With Soderblom and Stauber showing promise as a backup, and Commesso playing in Rockford next year, Murray would block the development of youth. If the Hawks need a vet, they can resign Stalock.

I’m stating a fact. It’s not even worth arguing with you if you really are delusional enough to think any of your LHD are better than Rielly. They aren’t even in the same tier. Luke Hughes may be in the near future but he’s a kid. Bahl isn’t even remotely close. Siegenthaler is a prototype stay at home defenceman. Rielly can do everything he can and he’s one of the better offensive defenceman on the left side. He’s in the top 10 in the league among LHD.

There’s a reason he makes 10 times what he makes. And he is undeniably better than Siegenthaler. I can’t believe this is even a conversation.

This is uhh... this is some hot lava here.

They are polar opposites. Mo is a run of the mill O-Dman able to produce 50-60pts a season (arguable with having a great team in front of him). But his defensive numbers are terrible, and have never been good. To say he's "top 10 in the league among LHD" is a stretch for sure.
Siegenthaler is a stay at home DFD. His defensive metrics are complete opposite to Mo, because he can actually play defense. But he can't produce points. That's where they are opposite.

Mo is an overpaid OFD, and you can get better metrics on the market without having to cough up 7.5m

This is pure homer. Siegenthaler is a premier defensive defenseman, and aside from a recent slump was the perfect complement to Hamilton's offensive skill. Rielly makes more than our entire left side combined, and doesn't provide the defensive consistency of Siegenthaler, the offensive upside of Hughes, or the contract value of Bahl. There is zero reason to trade Bratt for a LHD

I can’t believe this “debate” is happening. Rielly a defensive liability? This is so ridiculous it’s not worth my time. If you think Siegenthaler who’s a getter version of Ryan Lindgren is better than a guy who has out over 70 points from the blue line… yikes.

Except he is. Cool, he scores points on a stacked offensive team. But his defensive numbers have never been good.

I never said Siegenthaler was better, I just said they were polar opposites. The Devils don't need any of the offensive numbers Mo brings, not enough to flip Bratt for him lol.

Another person with charts that mean nothing thanks. Every time someone shows me one these charts to try to prove their point about a player I see play every game I get sick of having to see this nonsense. All it does is show me how ridiculous these charts must be. The amount of times Rielly has been left back on a 2-1 and had to make a play to break up a pass like he did in Game 1 alludes me because it’s every other game. However these cute charts are made they must have some bizarre definitions of what constitutes defence.

Ah, the good ol’ “the charts don’t mean anything because said player is on my team”.

I watched Mo turn the puck over and give TB like 3 Ozone chances in the first 5 minutes lol.

Anybody who watches more than just box scores could tell you he’s a complete defensive casualty. Let’s start being for real here.

Well numerous times these charts contradict what I see from my own team and I don’t trust them. I also don’t trust people who aren’t leafs fans and hate the team to evaluate our players accurately. Unless you can show what your chart even is supposed to demonstrate, I see no reason to care about it. I want to know why my nearly 50 years of playing, coaching, and watching the game should all be tossed aside because you found a pretty chart. Why does the chart matter?

See, this tells me a lot about you.
"I can't read advanced metrics and I don't know what any of it means. But I've been coaching for 50 years and Mo scores 60 points so that means he's great all around"

In short, the numbers indicate his percentile amongst other defenseman playing in the same position. Offensively, he's producing. But defensively, he's terrible. His EV Defense is in the negatives, which means he has a NEGATIVE impact defensively when he's on the ice. Not good. And this season, he's in the 6th percentile among dmen in the same position deployed similarly to him.

In the "50 years" you've been around the game, it's progressed more than box scores and +/-. You might want to start getting with the times.
I don't even hate the leafs. In fact, I've been rooting for their success. But to say that he "can do what Siegenthaler can defensively" is a brutal take all around.

How do they come up with the 6th percentile? What are they basing this off of? They’re saying 94% of LHD are better defensively? I’d love to know what they base that off of.

It's based off his comparison to other defenseman deployed similarly. Primarily meaning ice time within that position. So amongst other top LHD.
