Kings aren’t gonna down grade this pick</div></div>
He was a late second rounder, so you're already bordering on third and he hasn't really grown his game in the 2 years since he was drafted so his value has dropped. 2 4ths is probably pretty close to his market price right now if he were on the market. I'd probably not move him if I were you at that price because the longshot of him breaking out and just running with the hand you have is probably a more appealing option than non-needle-moving picks.

Alternate Idea
From an NJ standpoint this would hurt but I think this could get done. It addresses a need from a position of strength and the value is pretty close (much closer than most on this website)

Yeahhh, any offers they might've turned down are long gone now. Markstrom has significantly less value than he did at the trade deadline. He has 1 less year of contract control, He's now squarely in regression age, teams get 1 less playoff run, He hasn't been nearly as good as he was earlier in the season, and there will be a bunch more options (All of which are younger) in the offseason which will drop his value even further.

Marner is better than Bratt but he's no so much better than Bratt that NJ would be willing to give up one of the best contracts in the league only to pay Marner 11+ million and handcuff their cap position and I hardly think that an additional 20ish pts is worth an additional 4-5 million AND giving up a top 10 Defenseman in the league

Nothing new in that NJ trade, it's been a hard no for the last 3 years and you are still very short of value

An optimistic next few months for the New Jersey Devils
NJ absolutely does not need and cannot afford Hanafin. They've got Hamilton who is far better than Hanafin, Luke Hughes will be the no1 on the left side, and they'll have Nemec for years to come on the right. They might even have Casey ready to jump in on the right side next year who is going to be a high end top 4 guy at minimum. I also think thats an overpay for Markstrom, 2025 first would be fine but Markstrom isn't the best goalie for this team and he's too old to pay a top 10 pick for, NJ just won't get the longterm value they need from markstrom to justify that price. I'd rather add to a '24 first for a longterm solution than get a rental retirement age goalie.

Rework
SO if nemec is part of the trade, you are about a Swayman, an high end prospect and an early first from the value here

Where would you like to see markstrom go
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>At 4.5 million? 2025 lottery protected 1st. Nothing else</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Redmile04</b></div><div>What would you think is a fair price for Markstrom? At 34 he's probably not upgrade to your Stanley Cup Goalie lol</div></div>
I'd go up to a Lottery protected '25 First, a '25 Second and somebody like Daniil Orlov (possibly a bottom pair guy eventually). That's even a lot tbh given Markstrom's Age and the fact that there will be a bunch more options come summertime.
Edit: For reference. This is a hair under what the Devils acquired by trading prime Taylor Hall the year after he won the Hart trophy on a rental deal. This would be a max in a negotiation before I'd give up but I really think the value is less than this though

You already missed the best price for Markstrom, If he's getting moved it's going to be cheaper than any prediction at the deadline and none of those even had Mercer.

Pulling The Cord On The Core
Jersey would never do that, they get like 20 pts extra a year for a player who will cost 4 million more after figuring out the extension AND they have to add a franchise defenseman on an ELC?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Calgary won't be adding to a trade with NJ they already turned down. PLD could be a trade target and Mangiapane makes a lot of sense as the main piece in the return package from the Flames.
It's strange how PLD has no trade protection at all this year but a full NMC kicks in next year.</div></div>
Well Markstrom is way less valuable come summer time and NJ's '24 1st is far more valuable so yeah they likely would have to

Draft trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffGorton</b></div><div>Yeah they would. Why would Jersey want a player that will only be NHL ready in 2-3 years when their window to win is now. Holtz is at the very least nhl caliber and on his elc. Thats worth more than a 14th overall pick in a weaker draft</div></div>
Becasuse that asset can fetch a far better goaltender than Markstrom. That could be the core piece in a Sarros Trade or an Ullmark trade which are far more appealing options to NJ than Retirement Age Markstrom

Now that Markstrom is going to be a year older for the next playoffs and they have a year less control, it'd be a miracle if you pulled Holtz from NJ for a retirement age goaltender

No shot you get that return for NJ, You couldn't even get that from a deadline where he was the only option available and 5 teams bidding. You certainly aren't getting it with 1 less playoff run possible, another year older, more options available, and better options available.

Palat is expensive but he drives play like a legit Top 6 Forward, even if the points aren't gaudy. There's no reason to throw away a first to get rid of a guy who is still valuable to the team especially if they aren't in a cap crunch yet. He's going to need to be gone in 2 years to sign the RFA's longterm but get the value out of him until then.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Boston isn’t trading Swayman and certainly isn’t doing it for Lindholm, Toffoli. I doubt they’d consider Mercer and he’s a better long term option.</div></div>
Yeah I get that but until he's got a longterm deal you never knew what was going to happen. NJ has had its fair share of "wow wtf" moments for me to know that sometimes crazy unexpected things happen (Like Kovalchuk retiring 3 years into a 15 year deal and mid prime at age 27) but they'll slow significantly/stop once he signs a max term deal
