As it stands right now there's no way I'd give $9 million to DeBrincat. Taking into account an extremely talented forward coming from the draft in this scenario, no way in hell I give DeBrincat that contract.

I feel strongly that DeBrincat will go back to scoring 40 goals again if we replace Coach DJ.

Yeah I think they flip Cat for a couple picks maybe a prospect instead of 9 million there.

How high should the picks be?

I mean I'd think he'd get a good 1st and a 2nd or 3rd depending if they want just picks or a prospect instead. I don't think you get the exact quality you paid for him though.

any team that finishes in the bottom11 can win 1st OA so yes OTT can get 1st OA if they finish between 1-11th

i know that part, any team that fiinishes i the top 8 i the conference also make the playoffs so technically they can do that too but they wont. I guess what i should have said is they are such a joke they cant win anything, even a draft lottery

There's no point paying $9 million for DeBrincat when in this scenario we'd have Tkachuk, Stutzle, Giroux, Batherson, Norris, Bedard, Pinto, Greig, Joseph etc.

1. A long term deal at roughly 9 million is what it will take to prevent DeBrincat from walking to free agency next year.

40 goal scorers don't come around that often.

When Coach DJ is having DeBrincat play with Pinto instead of Stutzle and then getting him to battle for loose pucks in the corner against much bigger players, there's obviously an issue.

2. If we finish better than 11th worst in the league, we don't get Bedard.

3. I'd rather move out Joseph instead of DeBrincat, given that DeBrincat contributes a lot more offensively.

And Greig is still a rookie.

And we might lose Batherson to the Hockey Canada scandal.

The Sens might look very different when next season rolls around.

I assumed this exercise is that the Sens get a top five pick. My problem with DeBrincat is even at his best he's still not a $9 million player. If he needs $9 million on his next deal, he'll be out the door so fast he won't know what hit him.

1. We might get a top five pick.

What I'm saying is that the only way we get Bedard is if we get the #1 pick.

2. Nashville needed to give Filip Forsberg 8.5 million on a 8 year extension to stop him from disappearing as a UFA.

When you factor in higher taxes in a place like Ottawa, you can see why it might cost 9 million to keep someone like DeBrincat.

Forsberg takes home more money from Nashville at 8.5 million than DeBrincat would from Ottawa at 9 million.

DeBrincat's cap hit might be 9 million, but he would be taking home less than 5 million.

I understand all of that, my point is I would never give DeBrincat $9 million. And the fact that he has one more RFA year he can be traded.

I would hesitate very hard to give DeBrincat anything more than 7.5 AAV

Batherson makes 4.975 AAV, DBC is not better

And IMO he is nowhere near Stutzle, Tkachuk and an healthy Norris who all make ~8.0 AAV

I actually would rather use the cap space left by DBC departure and some of the picks gotten in a trade for him to acquire players in the Nick Paul or Connor Brown mold. Puck hounds who are great defensively and good at even strength

You think Cat isn't better than Norris who scored 35 goals one season?

I'd be happy to see Cat play with skilled players, like it was mentioned above. Not playing with third line rookies and the like.

Josh Norris is a center. He is excellent defensively and on face-offs, he has way more efficient size too

Norris shot is more dangerous too. DeBrincat is quite overrated it seems. He played with Patrick Kane in Chicago but the player we see this season gives you a better idea of his ability. He's a first liner but he's not as good as "advertised" by some

Here he plays mostly with Batherson, Pinto and Giroux at Even Strength, plus Stutzle and Tkachuk on the PP. These guys are pretty good I think

I take Norris at the same salary over DeBrincat without even thinking
