A swinny offseason

Description
My outlook:

The team is good. Goaltending again, maybe a concern, but Samsonov has been good and Woll in his cup of coffee looks like he could handle 20-25 games next year (which for me is ahead of where I had him). Further, Woll looses waiver exemption, and I would think he gets nabbed if he were sent down.

Foward core as many possibilities. Abolsutely keep Bunting (lower AVV for term) and ROR (he has been fantastic). Bottom 6 has a lot of flux, but unlike entering 2022-23, has much more sandpaper. Knies starts in a 3rd line role; with options like Acciari and Tufte to move up if it doesn't work. 4th line should be very energetic and physical.

Leafs system is strong enough at forward that, like 2022-23, callups will fill spots (Steeves, SDA are immediate thoughts).

Overall, not seeing a need for an overhaul at all.

Defensively, opting to carry 8 D - and for good reason. Kràl, Hallowell, Villeneuve and Neimela are all good looking prospects still, but in case of injury, not where I want to go. They simply need time to see exactly what is there.

So, I bring back Schenn - as a vet leader, presence and a player who can be used to manage workloads.

Most will see the Stanley deal as nuts, but like Schenn (see a beautiful mentoring relationship there), will be used to manage workloads. Further, he is brought in to replace Giordano after this year.

Both players are more than capable of playing meaningful minutes, and more than sufficient replacements if injuries happen.

Top 4 seems set, with hopes that Timmins can develop further and push for more minutes (I can't see Brodie being a Leaf beyond this year). McCabe and Liligren takes reps with Reilly with that anticipation.

Overall, this blueline is deeper and significantly more physical than past builds.

In an Atlantic that I think will drastically change next year, I see this team having the goods.

  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2025 (NYR)
Détails additionnels:
2025 4th rounder is conditional on Hawks moving Murray for a pick better than a 4th rounder.

Example: Hawks move Murray at the deadline with retention for a 3rd, Leafs recueve the 4th.

Example: Hawks move Murray at the deadline with retention for a 4th, Hawks keep that pick.
CHI
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (BOS)
Détails additionnels:
Well, since this looks just like the Mzàrek deal.from.last year, I have to think the Hawks are game too it again. And when healthy, Murray is better..... flippable asset possibly.
2.
TOR
  1. Tufte, Riley [Droits de RFA]
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (DAL)
Détails additionnels:
Stars get an offensive upgrade on Tufte. Injuries aside, Roberston has the skill to be a legit top 9 forward - and with an aging core, bringing in Robertson he could very well be part of the future there with Hintz, Johnston, and his brother.

The 3rd rounder is conditional on Robertson actually staying healthy and playing.
DAL
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
Détails additionnels:
Robertson at this point needs a fresh start. Absolutely snake bitten on Toronto. I have to think Nill will be intrigued uniting the Robertson boys......

Further, given what I am doing here, Robertson just doesn't fit.

Tufte has a high hockey IQ that goes along with his size and physical game. Granted, his inability to stick in the lineup in Dallas maybe a concern, I simply see a long term role for him in Toronto.

I am sure fans will hate this return, but the injuries have simply killed his trade value.
3.
TOR
  1. Stanley, Logan [Droits de RFA]
Détails additionnels:
Leafs get a young big physical D in Stanley, who can play meaningful minutes. A perfect fit in the bottom pairing long term, but for this season used to manage workloads on the D core.

The Leafs D depth is weak imo (Král, Hallowell, Villeneuve, Neimela just are not NHL ready yet). Stanley fills that gap in spades.

Leafs forward depth is strong, so like the Jets moving from a position of strength, so are the Leafs.

Just a good hockey deal.
WPG
  1. Hirvonen, Roni
Détails additionnels:
Jets organizational forward depth behind Lucius and Lambert simply lacks. Hirvonen has a well defined defensive game that at the very least fits a bottom six 6 role.

With 2024-25 looking like such a question mark in Winnpeg, filling out the forward depth makes a lot of sense - particularly when it is clear the Jets are moving from a position of strength. Just a good hockey deal.

I don't think Stanley has much value if any, maybe the Leafs coaches can develop big Logan into something useful cause the Jets sure can't, just seems doubtful that he has what it takes though.

Spent the better part of this season on the DL.

Last year looked good as a bottom pairing option.

The reality is, Stanley was never going to stick on Winnipeg - Samberg, Heinola, Chisholm are all better.

Stanley is what he is. Big body, stay-at-home D that moves bodies. He does that, he fits.

Hawks probably decline. They have Mrazek for another season. He provides the level of goaltending the Hawks want just fine. Stauber or Soderblom will be next season's backup

I’d take the trade solely for the first then buyout the last year of Murray’s contract

Stanley is dust, not worth it for really anything, not to mention Hirvonen is actually decent.
Tufte I believe was on waivers earlier this year. He’s a nothing piece. Nick Robertson is still only 21 years old, why sell when his value is at its lowest?
Murray shouldn’t cost that much, if anything to dump. We got him when he had 2 years left on his deal and were paid a 3rd + 7th to take him. He’ll now only have 1 year left on his deal, has actually had a decent year when he’s played, and has an incredibly low buyout cost if I’m not mistaken. At most he costs the same to dump as what we got to take him, which is less than this.

That's most likely going to be a very late 1st. Probably only 10 or 15 spots higher than the Ottawa 2nd. If it was the Tampa Bay 2nd then maybe. Then it's closer to a full round move up. Hawks needed a G when they made the Mrazak trade last season. Not the case this off season

If that floats your boat.

I mean, Murray when healthy has been effective. Landing a second pick put of that in the first 3 rounds (not unreasonable if healthy) works too.

The buyout option is certainly that - an option

Stanley isn't dust my friend. He is not a top 4 D either.
He is solid as a bottom pairing D, who last year was playing 15 minutes a game, and on the PK. As I said, the Jets always had better options, and that tree is bearing fruit.

Hirvonen is one of a dozen undersized bottom 6 forwards in the Leafs bin. He is perhaps more NHL ready than most, but to be frank, an undersized forward is not what the team needs.

Yeah, Tufte cleared waivers. But all season we have seen some odd decisions on the waiver wire (can we say Tolvanen?) and typically 4th liners are not nabbed, which is what Tufte is..... but has the size and IQ (which I mentioned) to be a good one. Robertson maybe just 21, but he has spent more time on the IR than on the ice..... and changing the scenery for him maybe beneficial for the Leafs. Cut and move forward. Just because he is young, those injuries have tanked his value. And.... the Leafs really need another undersized forward.

Moving Murray at this juncture makes sense imo. He has been good when on the ice, but moving down some spots to free up cash is where I go over a buyout. Cap is valuable.

I would take Tampa's 2. Just we can agree Murray is better than Mzarek. But still...... ends to a means.

🤣. I have seem you post often enough that unless it's a shiny name, they all suck.

Stanley is a great fit. Young, big and hits. There were always better options in the Peg, and they are now NHL ready. Doesn't mean he sucks, it means the Jets have drafted blueliners that well.

or, you could actually watch stanley or look at the numbers etc etc etc. He is a bad bad hockey player. He sucks a lot. If he played he exact same way with the exact same results but was 6 feet tall he'd have been in the ahl permanently a long time ago.
Big young and hits are meaningless if he isnt good at actually playing hockey. He's extra useless because he should be able to use that size to actually, you know, defend. but he constantly gets beat and he hits because he never has the puck. He's a perfect fit on the Marlies bottom pair, not the leafs
