But it does slightly make sense if they think they are good enough and will be for a bit, so they can use their assets to stop another team from acquiring Gavrikov, like a Tampa Bay or Boston or New Jersey, who would be competing with them to win the East.

Well I thought I was going to stay out of this, but... It is never good form to give up assets to grab a player primarily so a competing team doesn't get him. That can be a dangerous game. You load up with the players that fit your team structure and you take your chances. You focus on getting better rather than trying to prevent someone else from doing so. I think there's a chinese proverb in there somewhere. I am not fond of these trades either.

kk, in spite of all the hate he gets, is our long term 2/3C. staal can’t play forever. it doesn’t make sense to move him for a rental. we also hold our first for a forward, gavrikov doesn’t do anything for us and would slot on the third pair.

I think we need to worry about ourselves tho. I like Gav but don’t think he’s worth stopping another team getting him. I’d rather use those assets on a true top 6 impact player and find a lesser third pairing dman to supplement what we have.
