-We are now at Day 71 since the last time Sean Monahan played an NHL game. There's only two and a half weeks left til the deadline with no sign of him being close to playing. Assuming he doesn't play against Chicago tonight (nothing I've seen leads me to believe otherwise), there will be only 7 games left between now and the deadline to get back into game shape - and that's assuming that he's all of a sudden ready to play on Thursday after weeks of the Habs basically disappearing him. I'd be shocked if he's moved at all, and I certainly don't see Minnesota giving up what they got for Kevin Fiala for a 20 game rental of Monahan.
-Calgary literally cannot afford Josh Anderson. They have $1.3M in cap space for '23-24 - adding Anderson puts them $4.2M over the cap. Not to mention I can't see a world where they're giving up one of their top prospects on top of having to dump the multiple contracts they'd need to move to get under next year's cap. There's just no way I can see Calgary being the team chasing down Josh Anderson without sending someone like Blake Coleman back - and I don't even know if I'd want to do that if I were the Flames.
-Even *if* you got Lucic in that deal, why would you just try and dump him out with a pick? It's 20 games, just keep him on the books til the end of the year, maybe see if he rubs off on some of the kids while he's in the room.
-Edmundson has been bad bad bad this year, and, big surprise - he's hurt again! I will never underestimate the ability of NHL GMs to get drunk on the possibilities of a 6'5" defenseman, but his recent injury history is incredibly sobering. Back injuries tend to become chronic issues, and any team looking at acquiring him is going to get scared off by the fact that he's out - again - with an upper body injury.
-Why trade Kovacevic now? I think a 4th/5th is probably fair value for him, but at this point you've got so many injuries, why move out a healthy body? The D pairs for Montreal's last game were Matheson-Barron, Savard-Kovacevic, and Harris-Wideman. Trade Kovacevic, now Wideman's playing 2nd pair minutes and who do you even call up for that last spot? Madison Bowey? Corey Schueneman? At this point, I think Kovacevic's worth more to the Habs than whatever lottery ticket draft pick they'd get in a trade for him.
