Mantha - unlikely

Description
Let me know what you guys think a full deal like this could potentially look like. I was thinking the Leafs send over Robertson who can potentially provide a 2m value for the Caps next year.
Transactions

  1. Mantha, Anthony (1 140 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Unlikely that WSH retains cap but maybe they can make it work. Leafs would probably have to provide them with an ELC player that can potentially provide ~2m value next year.

Mantha is all skill and no compete. Every once in awhile he'll look amazing. But then he'll return to being who he is. A big, lazy floater making too much money who doesn't contribute much. Stay away from him. You'll regret acquiring him.

He has an excellent shot but it's usually taken from the cheap seats. Total perimeter player. I had such high hopes for Mo. But he only proved why he fell in the draft to Detroit. He's more spectator than player.

First 10 games of the season he looked like a god. Then looked like a god middle of season then scratched and plays with no urgency

Well Kubalik got off to a hot start. He has an excellent shot and he's skilled. He was recently scratched. He's not creating much lately and he's whiffing on shots on the power play.

That said he's a bargain at 2.5 mil with another season left on his contract. I don't think he gets traded unless it's an overpayment. Probably 2 2nds I'm guessing.

For the amount we payed for him it really really sucks. We all know what he is capable of. So annoying

It will be a tough fit, but they could probably make it work. Unless Bunting is taking 3.3m though, they would need to move off of Murray.

Yeah, Mantha was once a really good player in terms of talent, he had a shot, it's not just because he's a big body. They have the same production this year, so the question is what would the Leafs be missing here? It would be Kerfoot's contribution to pk and his ability to play C, so the assumption here is that they do find an internal replacement for him. If Mantha, can find his scoring touch again, then it's an overall upgrade. If not then they have a problem at 4.56m, that's why I said it's unlikely, but maybe Dubas can find a way to reduce the risk.

For next year, Kerfoot is unlikely to signing a 1-year deal to stay with the Leafs, so it's either they let him walk or bring him back with a raise (probably 3.75-4.5m). Those extra years could complicate things.

Yeah, maybe at 4.65m it would be too much of a gamble. Another concern would be his injury history. Low compete levels would be a major turnoff for sure, but the losing in Detroit probably got to him, and the Caps have had their own struggles as well.

I thought the Leafs should have got Kubalik to play with Kampf (not sure if they were ever linemates in CHI, think Kubalik played with Toews), so he definitely would be a better option, but if that's the ask, I think the Leafs could probably acquire Mantha at a slightly higher cap hit by bringing in a 3rd team for the same cost.

Mantha would be eaten alive in the Toronto market. He'd be Larry Murphy'd quickly.

Well, at least he might save one of the defenders from being the next whipping boy after Holl.

I don't think anyone likes Holl lol, but some at least give him credit for what he does do right, and recognize that most of the "replacements" that people suggest would be just as "bad" if not worse. Hopefully, he is signed elsewhere next year, so that we won't have to see any more Holl mock trades. My bet is he signs with one of the Oilers, Canucks or Senators if he stays in Canada.

Seems like it in terms of a roster spot. I think Liljegren will take his minutes, but the Leafs seem to want to add a defender still.

Supposedly, they might be interested in adding C depth. There are better options that might be on the market for that since Kerfoot isn't great in the circle but doesn't mean the Caps would land any of them. Even if they do land someone though, Kerfoot is on an expiring deal, and he has similar production to Mantha on the year. There's going to have to be more assets involved, but essentially it will be getting Mantha off the books. They could also choose to resign Kerfoot as an Eller replacement on the PK.

Interested in who reported that when Kuznetsov, Backstrom, Strome, Dowd, and even prospects like Protas, McMichael, and Lapierre are locked up for next year.

Probably an unreliable source tears of joy, but there could be truth to it if they are actually trying to move Eller since he plays the PK.

Worth noting though the guy that they were specifically talking about was Toews who is leading the way in the circle this year and with that comes his playoff pedigree.

Yeah, seems a bit strange. I get that Eller concern at the least, from an outside perspective, since it's unclear whether they trust Protas to play center on PK, but I just find it odd that they would work to add another center. In this given scenario, Kerfoot could also play wing, but I can't see Washington dealing Mantha for a different middle-6 winger instead of addressing bigger needs on the team.

Yeah, I have no clue what their needs are or what they want to add toward the deadline, but I suspect that they will do some selling and some small shopping if they start to slip out of their wc spot. I just chose Kerfoot since there has to be cap going out, the similarity in their production, and I'm guessing WSH isn't on his NTC. Either way, the Leafs acquiring Mantha is highly unlikely, especially this year. Might be a decent guy to acquire in the off-season though for the Leafs or another team.

I think Friedman or some insider did speculate on a possible Mantha for Boeser swap but I don't see that happening.
