That's kind of the whole point of me making this. There's no way they can be any good next season with so much money tied up already.

He's on their 3rd pairing though, so that's the least of their concerns. If they are going to be any good it's going to depend on that top 6. So either they work well or they will be bad for the next 2 or 3-years probably.

Mayfield isn’t worth $3m AAV. I think he has a reputation for being a better player than he really is. He’s a 3rd pairing defenseman on a good team. Teams get in trouble paying that kind of money to 5/6/7 defenseman.

I was coming here to say exactly that. (Well, I was going to say "lots of," not "31 other," but you get the picture.) For example, Pat Verbeek has height and weight requirements that Mayfield exceeds, and we're desperate for right-handed defensemen inasmuch as right now we have exactly one NHL-qualified RhD under contract for next season, and he's effective rookie Jamie Drysdale.

Islanders fans freaking out about paying $8.5m x 8 to Horvat should be more worried about paying close to 23 million for a mid tier NHL center position. That’s a lot of coin for Barzal Horvat JGP…someone has to go so guess we got the answer today.

Only thing worse than the isles trading for Horvat is signing him to an 8 yr deal. It won't age dreadfully but its just so blah. The new Anders Lee.

Except anders lee has been much better than Horvat over the last 5 seasons. Lee can fall off a cliff at any moment, but so far he’s lived up to his contract

BUT. I see like 16 million coming off the team in 2 years from Palmieri, Nelson, and Bailey.
3 years from now they're basically (if they dont screw it up) starting fresh, even after re-signing some guys

We're talking about guys who hover around 50-60 points who get paid like 1st liners.
