Description
Please forgive the line combinations and the short roster; I really haven't paid much attention to your team due to puck envy.

The purpose of this ACGM is merely to test the trade shown. Shattenkirk even with 50% retention isn't worth a second, even a future second, but the triple benefit of moving Khudobin's cap hit plus getting a third-round pick in this year's draft plus replacing Joel Hanley with an experienced defender who would be much better insurance against some unforeseen injury than Hanley should make this an even exchange, at least in my opinion. (This trade results in an additional roughly $1 million of cap space.)

I feel decidedly Meh about it, so its probably balanced. Not sure it makes any sense for the Ducks, but balanced. We are already playing a PTO guy on defense and don't really have anything adequate to fill that void left by Shattenkirk. If we were trading Stolarz out of town, we can slot Dobby in as backup and let Dostal not get killed behind our even worse defense after this deal.

My thinking here is to recover something useful for Shatty. The way he's been playing, I don't think he gets more than a fourth, which in my theory of draft value, is little more than a dart throw. I'd rather get a second (even a future second) and send a third back than get a fourth or fifth for him. And without the 2023 first Dallas used to acquire Nils Lundkvist, and without a third in the 2023 draft either, I think that the Minnesota pick might be of significant value to the Stars. Plus there's the $1 million cap savings that results from the difference between Khudobin's hit ($2.2 million) and Shatty's ($1.9 million) plus not having to have Hanley on the roster ($750).

Not sure this makes any sense for the Ducks to be honest. A 2nd a year delayed is way too close to the same value as the 3rd this year. Yes, the 2nd is better but the gain isn't nearly good enough for me. If both picks were in the same draft (either year doesn't matter) it becomes more clearly a trade you could make.

So if the picks wash (mostly) we're giving Dallas Shattenkirk retained for a pure cap dump. Getting him off the roster has value in itself but so does that retention slot. Can we get better value from that being the 3rd party in a trade? With the number of teams needing retention to make deals work I really think I'd explore that option before doing this.

Fair enough. Your point about the respective values of 2023 third vs. 2024 second is extremely well taken. I actually considered this beforehand; normally I would have made it a same-year transaction but because Dallas doesn't have a 2023 first, I didn't think that they'd want to trade their 2023 second, too, especially because this is expected to be such a productive draft. I think that maybe I was trying a little too hard to hammer a square peg in a round hole.

And we Anaheim guys should ALWAYS be honest with each other!

It is a tricky one to evaluate because there are going to be a lot of moving parts like what I said with the retention slots. Or with three 2nds already do they value a delayed pick a bit more? Are they going to bundle some of those picks to move up? A lot of questions between now and the draft.

I don't think Nill makes this deal as Hanley is the perfect 7th D and will likely resign with the team before the end of the season. He can play both sides, slot in any pairing and hold his own in both ends. I also think holding on to Dobby makes sense as our goaltending becomes rather weak behind Otter and we will want that insurance for a long run. The only reason I can see this deal going through is if we need the extra cap to make a move but I think that 2024 second would have to go away with any trade so we couldn't make this move anyways.
