You're asking the poorest franchise in the league to buy nothing picks for millions of real dollars. What do you mean free picks lol?

Kane is owed 2.9 mil in real money this year. 25% of that is like 725K, and thats pro-rated cuz its at the deadline. If you aren't willing to take on the equivalent of a league minimum contract for a 4th and 7th round pick, you're lost. I get not wanting to waste a retention spot for that, but if the argument is real money, then you're wrong.

Maybe, but I feel that this is an honest trade from NY (NY gets an aging superstar) Chicago gets 2 top young prospects + a mid-tier prospect with upside (+ picks)

It is not "millions in real dollars". The daily cap hit may be $2.625M, but the actual salary at that cap hit is only $750k, and that number reflects the entire season. Whereas, this would be a move between now and the TDL, and therefore it would be prorated to an amount FAR less than $750k. Something closer to $400k or less. That is only until the end of the season, at which point Kanes contract expires. That is an EASY couple of draft picks for any team. Unless AZ is going to need all three of their retention slots, a 4th and a 6th to retain that much salary is a no brainer.

Yeah. Something like this is probably the bare minimum. Kravtsov is looking like a bust, although it's probably way too early to really say. Grubbe is interesting and is lighting it up in the WHL. And, last but not least, Cuylle was fun to watch in the WJC back in August. I still have doubts about his ability transitioning to the NHL well, but if it does, he could be an interesting bottom 9 role player type.

Leafs can offer a 1st, 3rd Topi,Voit,Lisowsky & it would be the same or better already

    Oilers can give up Broberg,Lavoie,Poolparty,Yamamoto & 1sts

Hawks won’t be taking the bare minimum after getting fleeced for Debrincat & losing 3 young pieces for nothing or picks in Kubalik,Strome & Dach

Kravstov isn’t a Top prospect anymore, his value isn’t what it used to be & is soley based on potential that is diminishing by the day to call him mid tier even would be generous i say he is but it’s a matter of if he can be the Lottery pick he was destined to be. , Grubbe is a Top prospect no question but Cuylle on the other hand no matter if he looked good in the WJC he has been imo struggling in the A & value on him isn’t A+ prospect level, I’m saying B+ at best. Still I know teams will offer better then that cause this is Patrick Kane we’re talking about here & Chicago lost out on Dach & Debrincat in 2 moves that weren’t particularly good, So i doubt they’ll take this

Here's what Davidson's been emphasizing in his trades: draft picks, players with speed, players with "high compete." I looked up the Rangers prospects and none of them look to have the speed; Kravtsov, in particular, is called out by Core Pronman at the Athletic as having "below average" compete.

The Rangers are particularly appealing as a trade partner because they have two first-round picks in a great draft year. Unfortunately, they are both going to be late picks . . . maybe even #31 and #32. So I think it's much more likely that Davidson asks for both those 2023 first rounders plus a sweetener. At the very least, he might take a 2023 first (whichever is higher), a 2024 first, and something else. And he's not giving up draft picks to make it all work.

I appreciate your sentiment, I really do. But I don't think our GM is as concerned with all of that as most people think. It's possible he regrets not getting a bit more in the DeBrincat trade, and he should. But as far as Kubalik, Strome, and Dach go, I don't think he is very concerned. He wasn't wrong that our pipeline was severely lacking and that building for long term needs to start there. Icing a strong team just puts us further back in the draft and lowers our chances of picking legitimate prospects. Being sellers last year got us more lottery tickets and will do the same this year. The culture in CHI was getting a little too relaxed, players were coming in and just expecting to win because it's CHI. The reason we won those 3 cups was strong depth and hard work. Having a few superstar players definitely helps, but that can only take you so far.

So, as far as how those moves fit the long term big picture of the Hawks, I think he is satisfied and doesn't want to spend time dwelling on "what he maybe could've got instead" or "maybe they could've won a cup this year if they kept everyone together". The rebuild was overdue, and trying to drag things out and selling the farm every year to "win now" just wasn't working for the long term anymore. Personally, with some of last years roster and this years coaching, I think CHI would've been at the top of the standings. But I understand why slowing it down and building a solid prospect pipeline and instilling a winning culture is important.
