Eberle was a cap dump at $5.5mil, the JGP trade was fine at the time and the extension would be fine too if he wasn’t our third line center, and the only bottom six forwards he’s extended have been cheap deals to capable players

Really my only issue besides Toews is trading Ladd to sign Palmieri

All Lou had to do was not sign Leo and Hickey and the isles would’ve kept Toews. Or he could’ve just traded his first to dump Ladd instead of going after Palmieri and trading Toews for a bag of pucks lol.

Protecting Cal Clutterbuck over Jordan eberle for the expansion draft...every extension he has given to a bottom 6 forward....the JGP trade/extension....should I keep going?

eh i'll push back on JGP being a bad deal. The picks wound up being #28OA in 2020 (Ridley Greig) and #59OA in the same draft (Roni Hirvonen, Sens traded the pick at the draft as part of a package to move up.) Greig profiles as a bottom-6 guy at this point, barring a big development leap.

And depending how you feel about GSVA, he's more than lived up to the deal in its first two years. Not much of any surplus value, sure, but they're certainly not underwater at this point.

The last year or two might suck, sure, but he's been fine. I also wouldn't be out here throwing stones at other GMs if I put the Blackhawks & Leafs as my two favorite teams on my CF profile.

I like a certain kind of torture what can I say, the sad part is I became a hawks fan when I was young and they sucked and I started liking the leafs because Phil Kessel is like my hero lol.

The only team that can currently offer Horvat 8 years is Vancouver.

Detroit won't be buying at the TDL.

It would be a sign & trade, Detroit isn't necessarily "buying" here, it's a hockey trade where you get a London Ontario native who grew up a wings fan who's currently 2nd in goals in the league for a 2nd pairing RHD that would fit well with Quinn Hughes and cap space. Myers is included to allow Detroit to continue to contend for a wildcard spot without Hronek, and Detroit isn't exactly pressed for cap space right now so to me it fits.

Edit:

It’s a terrible deal for Detroit, and Hronek is worth more than Horvat.

The way both Horvat and Hronek have played this season it is at least interesting. I'm in debate about it so I don't think it's that that awful. If we weren't sending a second I might be more for it.

Obviously an extension would be in place of that deal happened. I'm not trading for Horvat for this year but for the future.

I know, I would prefer to keep Hronek and try and sign Horvat to a reasonable contract this offseason.

Ok but Detroit isn't a playoff team and probably finish in the bottom 10. Detroit has to resign Larkin, Bertuzzi, Veleno, Lindstrom and Nedeljkovic. They will still need to sign 6 more players for next season. Then the following season Kubalik, Vrana, Raymond, Seider, Rasmussen, Berggren, Perron and Hronek will all need new contracts. So, Detroit really doesn't have all that much cap space and adding Horvat at $8M and Myers at $6M makes it much harder to fill out the roster. Copp was added to fill the 2C spot and he has been playing very well recently. Copp signed for 5yrs and Larkin not going anywhere it puts Detroit in a similar situation as Vancouver with 3 top 6 centers.
