CBJ currently has the worst Points % in the NHL with 0.273%. Not only are they in a division where they are highly possibly the weakest link, they play in a very strong conference. It will be very hard to make a Wildcard spot in the east this year. So Columbus should sell this year and go for a very strong draft and off-season retool.
Laine gives the best chance to get a very strong deal, retaining $200,000 is just pennies. But that will help with extra money for the Jets to work with for Dubois. So on top of the 1st and 2nd round picks, CBJ will also get Chaz Lucius(19 yrs), drafted in the 1st round, 18th overall in 2021. Lucius will be close to NHL ready which will help with CBJ's retooling. CBJ also gets a solid veteran D-man in Schmidt(who has looked solid and has been creating lots of chances).
Another positive thing that benefits this trade is Nate Schmidt, who has a very good energy and positive attitude. That's what helped this solution, it's something very invaluable(a valuable key piece?) that can really help CBJ build on going forward. Precisely why it's sad to find a good solution like this. But this also helps with the confused logjam that the Jets have on D, with Chisholm needing room next year.
Winnipeg needs to worry about Chisholm and the lineup next year because he *won't* be waivers exempt. So win or lose, trade Brendan Dillon in the off-season and recoup strength in the Draft this year. Could also trade Chisholm along with Brendan Dillon and find a very solid #1 RD to play with Morrissey. Brendan Dillon's money will help with money for Dubois. Also, if there is a $4,000,000 M increase next year, the Jet's could afford spending the BIG BUCKS to LOCK UP Dubois.
In this situation, they already have $14,341,310 to work with and 7 to sign. Potentially add $3.0 M to make $17,341,310. So 'if' trading Brendan Dillon in the off-season, that will add $3,900,000. Which could make it $18,241,310-$21,241,310 with Dubois as the only notable must-lock up signing.
Barron, Samberg and Stanley are still RFA's for at least 2+ years, so we can just compromise the budget with them. Depth signings won't be much. Dubois could get paid the big bucks, depending on how many years he's willing to sign for. If we didn't trade for a RD, we could use space for a RD in free agency. KOVACEVIC!!... :'( (Was Capo holding a knife to Kovy's neck and forcing the Jet's hand? or what's special?)
That ship has sailed. Cheveldayoff backed his coach (now gone) and captain (now no letter) and has to live with that decision. Let Laine be happy where he is.
That ship has sailed unfortunately, would be great to see Laine with the Jets again and they desperately need another goal scorer but it isn't happening.. .. Cbus wouldn't retain either.
I feel the need to make a bunch of rando accounts just to like this several more times.
And yeah, CBJ are awful right now, but Laine’s not the issue.
At this point, I’m waiting for the Hockey Gods to grant CBJ their first win and gift them Bedard.
Or Bettman will just make sure AZ gets him so we can continue to have Hockey In The Desert™️ at a glorified practice facility.
In a season where so far nothing has gone right for Columbus you expect them to win the lottery, at least the positive for finishing last guarantees them one of Bedard, Fantilli or Michkov.

The only time they've ever actually finished last, they lost the lottery. But they really won it, because that was the Yakupov/Murray draft.

Let’s be real, everyone in the top 4 lost that draft, and I’d say there was maybe 8 picks in the first round that were really worth a 1st round pick that year.
