The trade off is between the intangibles Gallagher can bring vs the length of his contract, but I agree with you that he represents the identity of the organization and the culture they want to implement

Letang was drafted in 2005. His last contract will expire in 2028. LOL

Without Gallagher to impose that identity it will be lost. The length of contract and cap hit are of little concern when the culture changes to what the Leafs currently have

I do think Pittsburgh is one of a few teams where it makes sense to potentially move him - they've locked themselves into an older core and let's be honest - they're not sending back incredibly young guys either (McGinn's 28, Kapanen is 26.) I just think that, for now, Gallagher makes more sense on the Habs - they don't *need* to move the cap space and he strikes me as a great guy to have in the locker room while you're going to be bringing so many young guys into the locker room over the next couple years.

I’d do that trade… bc it literally does not matter that the Gallagher contract isn’t good… the pens won’t be either in a year or two…lol
PIT literally does not have to care about the future one bit for this season and the next couple while they let the core ride into the sunset…
the season they miss the playoffs and look bad doing it is the year they trade off everybody they can and begin THE REBUILD 3.0 And try to get the next Lemieux or Crosby…
