Description
Bortuzzo for Holl ( Plus whatever else makes it work from either side) would free up cap space and Bortuzzo is more of a defensive player then Holl. Bortuzzo also has one extra year.

Sheary adds scoring depth, Hathaway adds bottom line grit. Both Engvall and NAK get fresh starts.

Meier helps top 6. I know most will say SJ is not doing that and taking Leaf's trash. Robertson is a good prospect being misused a bit, Kerfoot good depth keeps cap close. Other prospects or picks could be added really whatever makes it work.

I am not sure if this tips the needle for the leaf's but I think with Muzzin possibly not coming back they should try and take advantage of that cap space and forward depth is where they mostly need it.

I see no need for the Caps to make this trade given their current spot. Sheary is doing far, far better than Engvall so far this year, and Hathaway is doing far better than Aube-Kubel, so I don't see any current scenario where the Caps make this trade.

What about Strome instead of Sheary?

Even more of a no-go. Strome has done better than Sheary and will be an RFA after this year, so even less incentive for Washington to get rid of him.

Engvall is something like 7 years younger and Washington seems to be sliding a bit. They may be playing better right now, this trade could help in the future as well. Not saying its a straight up perfect trade but could be a good starting point.

From SJ's perspective Kerfoot is pointless in a Meier trade. We'd want more prospects or picks and could also retain on Meier for TOR. Also it would be the 2023 1st rounder not 2024, unless maybe if TOR gives up Knies or Amriov, but that's highly unlikely and they shouldn't
so 2023 1st Robertson plus another prospect/pick or some combination of your good prospects, like Niemela, Hirvonen, Voit, Abramov, Minten etc

The idea that both 26 year old Leafs players MIGHT get better in the future when the Caps are clearly focused on winning now means nothing to DC. Neither player has proved that they can be consistently near where Sheary is, and since Washington is right in the thick of it, there's no incentive for them to make a trade related to this. Even less incentive for Washington given all 4 are upcoming UFAs, so they could easily lose both the guys they are getting in this scenario and lose out on increased output for the players they give up.

Thanks for the insight. Who would've thought two rejects both succeed in WSH?

Zero chance the Sharks accept that offer for Timo Meier, They will get far better offers elsewhere.

Sheary is the one that's really surprised me. WHen he got signed, it just felt like a run of the mill depth signing, like Hathaway, Dowd, and Panik before him, but he's done incredibly well. I don't think anyone was expecting that a random winger who profiles as a 3rd liner would do so well with Ovi, though I guess it could have been foreseen given his success while playing with Crosby (in fairness to Sheary, he's also done incredibly well on any line, must have something to do with the Laviolette system and not being expected to carry guys like Sheahan and Kuhnhackl around the ice)

Meier deal would have to start with 2023 1st + Knies, especially if SJS is retaining on Meier and taking another contract back in return

A rock is doing far better than Engvall. The worse signing in years along with Jarnkrok. Jarnkrok is on pace for 23 points and Engvall 10 points with a cap hit of 4.35 million. Neither guy hits or sticks up for their teammates, the perfect example of what a role player shouldn't be. We could have had Sam Bennett 2 years ago for a draft pick but l can't remember what round.

Think Sheary learned how to be thrive in a forecheck based system after joining WSH. In PIT he was always trained to be a possession player but now he’s figured out what to do if he needs to move up and down the lineup.
