Fixing the Leafs Once and For All

Créé par: OldNYIfan

Date de création initiale: 2 nov. 2022

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
. . . without trading William Nylander or Mitch Marner.

Dobson is under team control until at least 2027 (depending upon his next contract), Romanov is under team control until at least 2028 (depending upon his next contract), Pelech is under team control until 2029, and Pulock is under team control until 2030.

Pelech + 2nd = Brodie + 3rd
Pulock + 4th = Reilly + Holl
Romanov = Liljegren + 1st + Kral
Dobson = Sandin + 1st +1st

When Murray comes off the LTIR list, Kallgren and one of Benn/Mete go down to the Marlies.

Expiring UFAs create enough cash on hand to re-up Bunting at the right price and obtain some secondary forward depth.

I absolutely guarantee Lou Lamoriello would be 100% on board with this scheme.

Liljegren is quite a good defenseman on his own. Brodie is better, but that gap isn't that wide

Brodie used to be good, but he’s fallen off. I’d take Liljegren over Brodie alone.

I think the values are more like this:

Rielly + Sandin + 1st = Pelech and a 2nd

Liljegren + Robertson + 1st = Pulock

Knies , Niemela , 2 1sts = Dobson + 2nd

Romanov = two 2nds

Technically Romanov is worth the 13th pick in the draft lol

"without trading William Nylander or Mitch Marner." Actually I would prefer to trade Nylander because he good value...and so should get a good return. Actually I would prefer to trade Marner because he isn't good value and would like his cap hit removed.
Actually the trade proposed is kinda fair, value wise. Of course the teams don't/can't make the trades. Isles would hoping that they get good value on the three first rounders and Sandin and Liljgren.
But take a look at that Isles current defence. They are optimistic those young guys are all going to sign long term...they already have two. Could look the 2020s version 1970s Habs when they had Robinson, Savard, Lapointe playing.

My very first memory of interacting intelligently with someone on CapFriendly was the discussions between us you started back in 2018 about trading Nylander for a similar-value defender, and then @NickC1988 suggesting Nylander for Brett Pesce during his hold-out. My point here is that it's gotten later than that -- Toronto needs to construct an entire bottom 4, and soon, because a Band-Aid approach just isn't going to cut it unless Sandin and Liljegren pan out in a hurry. It takes time to develop defensemen -- of the 10 youngsters taken in the 2019 draft, only the first two (Byram, #4, and Seider, #6) have made an impact yet, and one of them (Johnson) isn't even signed.

Go back to 2017 and five Dmen were selected in a row at 14,15,16.17.18. None have made an impact yet. That was the year Liljgren was picked 17th, and his progress might as good as anyones of that group.

Leafs mismanagement of the, trading away picks, and not developing players has been poor despite their relatively good record in the past few years. It's gonna to haunt them, and teams that in their division that have cost efficient ELCs, RFAs prospects, picks and cap are gonna catch up the Leafs. Sabres, Sens, and Wings maybe even the Habs could be a East Conference playoff teams soon.

Leafs just aren't as good as last season. I'm hoping they don't go crazy by trading away futures for a band aid solution this solution and likely a first or second round exit. In summer of 2024, the Leafs can certainly retool and they will lots of cap space as Matthews, Nylander, Muzzin, Brodie and Murray will be UFAs. For Leaf fans, here's to hoping that a competent GM can find value.

Though I have hope for Sandin and Liljgren there isn't really another NHLer on the Leafs prospects that screams NHLer. Even the vaulted Niemela is no guarantee. Yep, you are correct Leafs will scratching to fill in the Dmen spots for at least a few more years, and hoping a few play well above their pay range.

And thanks for the compliment bud. I try to put forth an objective discussion with my CF pals. And you of course are one my favs. By the way, a beautiful fall in Ontario. Not all the leaves have fallen yet, and with the drapes open today, the sun beating in, it was 76 degrees inside....about 68 outside in Parry Sound, 140 miles north of Toronto on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron)

I've been curling for a few weeks now. Tonight a great night. Girl friend is curling, and I get to watch Leafs, World Series, Raptors, Survivor and maybe the Amazing Race. Aahh, life is grand.

I agree, it has gotten much later than that. At the time, that trade made sense. However, now it seems like Nylander is one of the most consistent forwards on the entire roster. This Leafs management group is reminding me of what Bowman was trying to do to the Blackhawks after 2015, try to plug every hole with a short term solution, taking risks on longer term contracts (Seabrook, Bickell) (Muzzin, Jarnkrok). Slowly, you're starting to see the Leafs ice lineups that are thinner and thinner.

Speaking of memorials. The brother and his wife (both alive) bought head stone monuments and had then "planted" in a family plot. I bought one too. at the same time. so Carol and I have one two beside my brother.
Still have Carol's ashes on home, next summer will probably do the proper burial.
On my side, I have a football, baseball bat and hockey stick inscribed on top, below my name, a guy fishing in his fishing boat.
Carol's side....artist supplies and a woman swimming with ducks.
