Basically, the Hawks are taking a lot of risk here by kicking the perceived return they would get for Kane down the road (minus AA) and hoping they get more for Marner. I wouldn't take that risk if I'm the hawks as if they keep Marner for another year, they will have to hope he can put up good numbers on a bad team without Matthews. If they move him in the up and coming offseason, Hawks have to retain longer 50% and the acquiring team has to have more cap space for Marner for 2 years versus TDL rental for the playoffs.
