Description
Trying to not be too dramatic but if this team gets to a point a shakeup is needed is it the coach or trade a piece of the core?
Was never a big fan of trading the younger nylander for Kane but it would be a shake up.
I would think nylander has more trade value than Kane cause of age and contract. Chicago could flip him later for a lot, auction him off to the contenders at a retained salary.
So leafs should include a first and try to get Murphy is this deal as well.

With this move also considering it should help matthews resign if we can resign Kane as well. You can play Kane with matthews, Marner back with JT.

Easily fits cap wise with Murray back. Would be over by a bit with muzzin back as well but realistically the whole roster won’t be healthy at the same time anyways. I don’t believe they expect muzzin back anytime soon. Could look for double retention on Kane for more flexibility.
Transactions
TOR
  1. Kane, Patrick (5 250 000 $ retained)
  2. Murphy, Connor
CHI
  1. Engvall, Pierre
  2. Holl, Justin
  3. Nylander, William
  4. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (TOR)
Détails additionnels:
Engvall and holl could be traded elsewhere but I don’t think Chicago would really care about 2 expiring contracts

You aren't getting both Kane 50% retained and Murphy on a 4 year deal for that.

I would love to see something like this. Logically I think the Leafs would have to sweeten this offer but, I don't know with Chicago

CHI declines. It's not an awful offer, and could probably get negotiations going. But, if it isn't obvious by now, CHI wants picks and prospects/young players (under 23-24). Holl and Engvall add very little value, if any, to the trade. They are involved simply to create cap space for TOR. Nylander and a 1st doesn't get you you Kane 50% retained AND Murphy. Past injury issues aside, good RHD are like gold in this league, and he is on a very manageable contract with term.

I don't hate this but, I don't think that Chicago would do that. It really does not seem like enough with a retention like that and a top four D leaving.

Probably any deal for both of those guys would be centered around young promising prospects and very high picks coming back.

Just my two cents.

Why do people think the leafs need another small forward that is a perimeter player? They need a guy that can get the puck and get to the net.

My thoughts with the nylander return for Chicago is they will most likely not get a better return than him since Kane will probably only waive for a couple teams.
Chicago should bring in nylander knowing they will retain on him and move him to a contender before the deadline. Nylander at 3.5 for 2 playoff runs? He can go to the highest bidder.
Ya it might not be enough considering the retention and Murphy but I think there’s a path to a deal

It's the way the Leafs are built, bring in Tom Wilson, and I guarantee the Leafs would make him play like William Nylander

Would you agree nylander has more trade value than Kane? Maybe it’s even with the retention. So then it’s just adding more to the first for Murphy. I think it’s doable.
Again this is if it’s clear a shake up is needed and I would want this trade completed before Christmas so Kane and Murphy have lots of time to fit in

Agreed. That's why I said it could get negotiations going. But, the deal isn't enough as it currently stands. That could probably get Kane alone, though. But it would most likely be with the intention of flipping Nylander. He is right on the line of being a player I could see being a long term piece and not, but I tend to lean toward flipping him in most hypothetical situations.
