Fixing team needs for contending in 2025

Description
MTL is missing (IMO) 4 pieces from their roster to become cup contenders. However, obtaining those 4 players will be hard.

MTL needs:

Top pair RD
Young playmaker to play RW with Suzuki and Caulfield (Slaf stays on 2nd line with Mesar in the future)
Starting Goalie (1A or better)
To move out older players (Armia/Hoffman) to gain valuable cap space.

Here is how I would try to fix the problem.

1) The very first thing is the 2023 TDL. All Hughes can hope for is to get some assets for Dadanov and Drouin and try and get the most out of Monahan that can be fetched.
2) Have to trade either Edmundson or Matheson at the TDL or by the end of summer of 2023. MTL has 3 rookies on the left side ready for NHL action. Could also trade one of the 3 rookies for some RHD prospect of an equal value.
3) Craft up some kind of exciting trade at the draft (same as the 2022 NHL draft). This team needs some excitement outside of the hockey rink to draw back in and retain more fans. Hughes and Gorton did say they want this team to be talked about with excitement and energy (what better way then another draft floor trade !)
4) Get Monahan back on a 2-3 year contract with a cap hit less then $ 4M.
5) Buyout Hoffman in the summer of 23.
6) Dump Armia in the summer of 23 for however much can be gained, even if it costs up to a 2nd round pick to do so.
7) CAULFIELD EXTENSION NEEDS TO MATCH THE SUZUKI CONTRACT FOR ANY OF THIS TO WORK.

I know the first thing most people will say besides S**T trades is that it'll be hard to keep all the rookies when their ELC contracts run out if they play well. But a lot of money comes off the books after the 2023-2024 season when a bulk of the rookies need extensions. By that time the rookies coming from Laval will push up and be on ELC contracts and the core will take the money coming off the books.

Spence makes the most sense being in the same age group as the new young core (Suzuki/Caulfield/Guhle/Dach/Slaf) and I believe he would be the cheapest RD prospect to acquire. Also he shares a Japanese heritage just like Suzuki so it would be a nice storyline IMO.

Did Drury kill someone and Gorton covered for him? Easy NO from the Rangers.

Honestly the defense would be a little rough, but the trade solves the center problem for the next decade. Gives Othmann a place to shine and allows us to lock up Miller. I just made a team with the trade above.

Why? Would Anaheim give up a 1st and 2nd and 4th round pick for Drouin and Dadonov and Monahan at 50% retained, When they're not making the playoffs. And Dadonov already said no to waiving for Anaheim or did you miss that part.

Okay if those players are being traded to contenders, then why not just trade them to those contending teams and leave Anaheim out of it.

If I'm a homer and this trade is GOOD for the Rangers, why does the poster say Gorton calls in a massive favor from Drury?

Schneider is 21...Laffy is 21....and Garand is 20, plus their 1st round pick for the 1st overall makes them a better team? Their window for the cup is the next 3 years while Shesterkin is on a steal of a contract, so this hurts them.

Really? And if Bedard doesn't turn out as expected? Or is that a guarantee? And what about trying to win a Cup while Igor is on a steal of a contract? And why does Gorton NEED a huge favor from Drury per the poster? I completely disagree.

Genuinely think Bedard is that good. Not an poor valuation of Schneider or Laf, but I genuinely think Bedard will be a franchise altering superstar center. And we haven’t had one since Messier. Mika is a number 1 for sure, but not a franchise altering superstar that can put up 90-100 points.

He may be....and he may not be. No 17 year old is a sure thing. Look at the numbers Laffy put up in Juniors, better than Crosby, and has he been a superstar yet? What happens if you make that trade and he turns out to be good, but not great? You give up a young future top 4 RD, a young top line winger in Laffy, a young G with lots of potential and a 1st round pick. You also have Mika and Trocheck signed long term, so where does Bedard play the next few seasons, 3C? Meanwhile, you give up all that young talent currently playing while Shesterkin's steal of a contract burns off. Their window to win a cup is NOW and the next two seasons, and Bedard doesn't help with that, it actually hurts it. No thanks.

Because who knows who will be contenders by the deadline. ANA was literally chosen because of alphabetical order under picking teams for trading. The post even says its to ANA but obviously is to contenders. Lots of people on this site will chose a single team to make multiple trades if it's TDL trades or something and they don't know who will be contending.

You need to relax and smoke some weed pal.

If anything I undervalued the 1st overall pick so I am not sure why some people are saying NYR says No and hangs up. Trade literally makes them able to sign key extensions and with Bedard you can trade Trochek for D help.

Nothing Laf and Kakko have done suggests they’ll be legitimate top 6 forwards. As much I love the way the play their lack of offense is beyond concerning for guys that were consensus picks. This move opens up cap flexibility to sign Miller long term who is more important to winning in the next couple of years than Laf or Kakko is. Garand doesn’t matter as long as Shesty is our goalie so that’s a moot point. Being objective and not biased the Rangers would be insane to turn down this deal if Bedard or Fantilli were the return.

You talk about consensus picks (Laffy and Kakko) not panning out as hoped offensively, so why would Bedard be a guarantee not to be the same? He is a kid and nothing is guaranteed. All the trade does is hurt the Rangers chances of winning a Cup while Igor is on a steal of a contract for this season and the next two. You effectively waste Igor's best years cap wise to win a cup. No Thanks.

No Thanks.

At this point I have very little hope that things get much better from here and that’s thanks to Quinn. At this point Bedard will at least have not been ruined by terrible mismanagement. Laf and Kakko are useless to the cup hopes of the team if they don’t start to produce and that’s a fact.

LOL. They are 21 and 22, they have time and its starting to show, especially with Kakko.

I get points aren’t everything, but if your in the top 6 good play needs to also translate to points on the scoreboard.
