Well some of them are which is why Edmonton made it to final four and 2 of these teams didn't make playoffs and one that did was eliminated by Edmonton. Think it's fair to suggest Edmonton has better players.
Which of these three trades do you need help figuring out why it's a massive overpay?
4th overall pick who's consistently proven to make his line mates better including McDavid.
Or the devils trade that is including two first round picks for at best a very marginal upgrade maybe.
Or the 3 first round picks for chychrun who can't stay healthy...
First trade doesn't make a ton of sense, and I agree with you on the 3rd being an overpay for Chych, but that Devils trade is a huge overpay from NJ for what they're getting back:
Severson put up better offensive numbers than Barrie last year (11-35-46 in 80 GP vs. 7-34-41 in 73 GP) while also rating as an above-average defender - in a vacuum, he's better than Barrie, and with the Devils retaining him down to $2.166M here, he's a MUCH more valuable player than Barrie and his $4.5M cap hit. I'd argue a late 1st rounder is fair value to help eat the cap and upgrade your RD depth chart by that much.
When you add in that the Devils are *also* sending 24-goal-scoring Yegor Sharangovich (24 years old, 1x$2M with RFA rights next summer) and only getting back Warren Foegele (basically half the offensive production, 2 years older, and a higher cap hit), I think adding a strong prospect like Bourgault is the *least* they can do.
Frankly, I don't think the Devils pick up the phone on that offer. They can most likely get a 1st & a decent prospect for Severson retained fully at the deadline, and they can get a pretty good package for Sharangovich if they wanted to as well, and they wouldn't have to eat two mediocre contracts they don't need to get those assets.
