Description
And this is why you wait. When you have all the leverage, you make the other party lower their demands. Absolutely insane contract negotiations from Nill this offseason. First Oettinger, and now Robertson. Incredible job by Nill to get both of these guys signed to extremely solid bridge deals that keep their rights with Dallas once they expire.

BIG W from the Stars front office this offseason.

Are you sure Robo will still be a UFA at the end of this? he will be 27. I assume he will be a UFA after this contract is up. Do we know?

Honestly this is probably the best possible outcome out of any scenarios at the table. Mad respect to Nill.

He'll be 27 three weeks after the contract expires so he doesn't meet the criteria of becoming UFA (27 years old or 7 full season accrued).

Robertson doesn't turn 27 until July 22. The cutoff is July 1, so Robertson retains his RFA status by 21 days.

It's the perfect bridge deal for Dallas. Likely locks up Robertson for the next 12 years.

Have you seen the market this offseason? The fact that Dallas got him for under $8M a year is absurd. The fact that they've essentially locked him up for the next 12 years (RFA after this contract is up) is also insane considering what guys like Stutzle, Thomas, and Kyrou saw this offseason. With Benn, Suter, Lindell, and Faksa all off the books by the time he's due for an extension, the Stars should have ample cap to sign him to a long-term deal at that point.

So yeah, Nill absolutely crushed this bridge deal for Robertson.

Lol... locked him up for 12 years. No they signed a 4 year bridge deal...

Why are you comparing his bridge to long term deals? You do understand ufa years cost more right?

Dallas is going to have exclusive rights and a ton of cap space to get a long-term deal locked in after this bridge is done. Am I saying it's automatic? Of course I'm not, but if you're asking me whether I'd rather pay him $7.75M now and $10M+ in 4 years when we've got the cap space and the cap is increasing or whether I'd rather pay him $9M+ until he's 30 and then lose him to UFA, then I'm taking the first option 10 times out of 10. Most people are.

Of course I understand UFA years cost more. I'm saying that if the Stars were going to sign Robertson to a deal that would have taken him into his UFA years, you're looking at easily north of $9M per year, based on what those other guys made this offseason. You want me to compare him to other bridge deals? Sure, this puts him on track with guys like Laine and Point, both of whom made less than Robertson on their bridge deals, but also saw shorter term. You're not going to get a player like Robertson on this kind of term for any less than what Dallas gave him here. Shoot, Dallas probably shouldn't have been able to get him this cheap. Try to spin this all you want, but this contract keeps Dallas in contractual control, allows them to kick the can down the road until some big contracts are gone, and doesn't force them to make any drastic moves for the upcoming season.

Why would Dallas automatically lose him if they were paying him 9m until he was 30? The real problem with paying him 9m now is that they don't have that kind of cap at this time. So, like you said they avoid having to make drastic moves.

If Robertson is likely to bolt at the 1st sign of free agency like you seem to be suggesting, he can still do it by just accepting his 9.3m QO. He could be signing a deal in 3 or 4 years time that makes up for not getting 9.6mx4.

This deal is a win for both parties.

I didn’t want to fully dump on Glendening as I do like him. Lol. We just don’t need him AND Faksa. The Swedes skate better. Delly and Damiani score more. I’m not as worried about it now that Robertson signed and we don’t need any additional space, but if DeBoer is being honest about everybody having a clean slate then he shouldn’t be in the lineup based on preseason performances. Also, if somebody picks up Glendening we can have three scratch players in stead of two. I feel like two is workable but why limit your options if you don’t have to? It’s a wasted conversation as he will be in the lineup. Likely because they “need him on the PK”

I'd rather have a good PK option like him on the 4th line than one of the young guys. Let the young guys see more ice time in the AHL (Bourque) or the WHL (Stankoven) instead of plugging them on to a line that's going to see extremely limited minutes. Glendening also gives us another solid faceoff option in the bottom-6 and on the PK. Solid guy to have out there for defensive draws that you really need to win. He plays a very limited role & does pretty well at it.

Josh Anderson and Jake Allen could have been yours for the low low price of Robertson and Oettinger. Classic homer fan trying to rationalize a bad offseason. just admit it, DALLAS FAILED!
