Doesn’t make sense for Florida - trading a future star 1C who’s still on an ELC almost never happens

Future 1C on an ELC for Toews who they won't be able to afford in 2 years doesn't make a lot of sense

Except Lundell isn’t that. He’ll never be the 1C in FLA, and for the next 5 years he isn’t even a top 10 center in the league (McDavid, MacKinnon, Matthews, Draisitl, Barkov, Eichel, Zibanijad, ROR, Point, Scheifle off the top of my head and that doesn’t even include guys like Bedard, Zegras, Behniers, McTavish, EP) so I would calm the future star 1C talk when the kid has one 40pt season.

He’ll be the 1B in Florida and will likely have a point per game season next season or the year after. He’ll most likely be in the 10-15 range for centers.

I would take Lundell over Berniers + Mctavish. Both seem like low end 1Cs. Lundell will be Bergeron lite

Lundells rate numbers were at a 1st line level last season, saying he had “one 40 pt season” is disengenous. He had 44 pts in 65 games, which is a 55 pt pace and he did in 3rd line minutes against tough competition.

Both Colorado and Florida pass.

Colorado isn't trading Toews, And Florida isn't dealing Lundell.

Ok, I’m not knocking him per se, but nobody that’s contending for a cup is trading a top 10 dman in the league for him. That’s ridiculous.

I never said they should, but it’s equally as bad from Floridas side. Trading a cost controlled future star center for a soon to be 29 YO (even if he is elite right now) with only 2 years left on his contract would be a terrible move.

44 points in 65 games is pretty good for a rookie, he does have 1C potential and he is very solid on both ends of the ice. Why would Florida move him before atleast seeing how he progresses for 1 more season.

With huberdeau gone and duclair hurt he will definitely get an increased role and he might break out even more given the opportunities

I mean from FLA’s perspective a team that won the Presidents Trophy last year, traded away Weegar, why wouldn’t you do it? An elite top pairing duo to pair with their forwards. I get the appeal of potential, lord knows I talk about it with Byram and Newhook, and cost controlled but an elite dman at under $5M for the next 2 seasons, when you’re that good like FLA is and your weakness is as blatant as it is in the d-corp. I get it though.

Florida can be a win now team but their future is bright as well. Knight has the makeup of a star G, their #1 D is only 26. Barkov and Tkachuk signed long term. Trading Lundell for Toews would be short sighted, having two 1C as soon as this upcoming season is an advantage that not many teams can say they have.

Byram and Lundell are much easier to project than Newhook. They’ve shown more at younger ages outside of the NHL and this past season. For example Byram had a solid two way impact at the age of 20 in the NHL which is extremely difficult to do no matter what team you’re on. Lundell produced at a PPG as a 19 YO in liiga, then followed it up with a 55 pt pace in the NHL while being in the 80th percentile among all NHL forwards in goals per 60 min and primary assists per 60. Newhook had a pretty good year all things considered , but it’s long shot he becomes a 1st line caliber forward. Byram you can project as a #1 D, lundell 1C.
