Description
Matthews was born on September 17th which is two days after the cut off for the NHL draft. If matthews were to have been born two days earlier, this is how the 2015 and 2016 draft would have shaken out

5-CAR-Hanifin
6-NJD-Marner

4-EDM-Tkachuk
5-VAN-Juolevi
6-CAL-Nylander
7-ARZ-Keller
8-BUF-Sergachev

Transactions
1.
TOR
BUF
  1. Matthews, Auston
Détails additionnels:
Would have been taken at two by Buffalo instead of eichel
2.
3.
TOR
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Détails additionnels:
In place of strome
ARI
  1. Eichel, Jack
Détails additionnels:
Eichel would have fallen to 3 to AZ leaving strome to fall to 4 who the leafs select
4.
WSH
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Détails additionnels:
Strome was the far and away third best prospect from 2015 and with him available, the leafs pass on marner and take the player who would be the top prospect in any other draft year.
5.
TOR
NJD
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Détails additionnels:
Carolina was still looking for defenseman so they would still take hanifin. That leaves marner to fall to 6 to NJ where they pick him up instead of Zacha
6.
CBJ
Now with the first pick in 2016, the leafs draft patrik laine as matthews is no longer available

If you look at the mocks from 2015 and if you actually rewatch the draft. Everybody has strome pinned over marner. He was the clear cut #3 at the time. If the leafs picked third that year, they likely go strome. The fall off between 3 and 4 was pretty sizable. Marner doesn’t hold positional value either so no reason they would reach.

hunter was a london knights guy, the pick was marner and it really wasnt that much of reach even at the time

Pretty sure it was fluery, hanifin, bean. Tbh I’m fine with hanifin as he was the clear cut #1 d man. There were rumors he could go 3 that year based on positional value. Fluery is fluery and it was the start of drafting LDs. They didn’t know they would have the chance to draft a top tier LD the next year. Bean confuses the hell out of me. They drafted two LD in the two previous years. If they wanted D, they could have gone with the top RD on the board in mcavoy but I guess they really wanted LD. Confusing for sure.

I never understood the Fluery or Bean picks, they just never developed and we’re eventually traded away for scraps.

I think the order would be

    1. McDavid
    2. Eichel
    3. Matthews

It feel like it was talked about often back then and that seemed to be the consensus.

I never said Marner was a reach. He was pegged at 4. Strome was clearly a better prospect however. Anybody who followed the 2015 draft would know that. Strome was a cut above marner. Not to mention he holds positional value as well being a C. So you have the better prospect in terms of talent and the more valuable position. The leafs weren’t backlogged at C either. Face the facts. Strome was the logical pick there and given the chance, the leafs would have taken him over Marner if both were still on the board.

You think so? Matthews to AZ makes the most sense. I think BUF would have taken Matthews because he would have been the youngest player in the draft and was in the 2 PPG territory for the USNTDP. In his D-1 year he put up numbers similar to jack hughes’ draft year numbers. Matthews to AZ seems like the perfect fit tho.

"Marner doesn’t hold positional value either so no reason they would reach." thats you. the only thing was postitional value, production was virtually indentical, marner had the btter IQ and 200 ft game, but like i said it was mark hunters pick, who drafted marner into the OHL and owned the london knights and was also the GM for over 10 years, hes back there now, the pick was marner

You are wrong, strome was the clear cut #3. If marner was the 3rd best prospect he would have gone 3 but he wasn’t therefore marner fell to the leafs at 4. You clearly don’t see my arguments and are stuck in your ways. We will agree to disagree.

I remember - that USTNP team was loaded....Matthews, Tkachuk, Kunin, Roslovic, Bracco (he was good then), Terry, Tage, McAvoy, Otter (Keller in some games).

Actually, year prior, I think Matthews and Eichel overlapped for few games.

But Eichel was seen as top American back then.

youre referring to mock drafts only without taking into consideration who worked for the leafs at the time and who was making the pick, you clearly dont get it lmao, strome wasnt even the clear cut number 3 as some people had hanifin, the reason why they had strome 3 was because he was center and was bigger, i see ur arguments but youre not taking in what im saying, but keep being arrogant

You do know that when hanifin was taken 3, strome was normally picked at 4 to Toronto. You clearly have hindsight bias here. Teams pass on players in a marner situation all the time. It’s not like they were guaranteed to take marner the whole time. End of the day, I see your argument and hear it loud and clear but the fact of the matter is is that strome was the clear number 3 that year who if he were to have fallen to the leafs, would have been taken by them. It’s speculation ofc but I will believe what I believe based on the research I have done and you can believe what you want to believe even if I don’t agree with it. So as I finished my last statement, we will agree to disagree.

I’m not sure Arizona will be in Arizona by 2024.

The McDavid/Draisaitl/Tkachuk line in EDM would be something else.

Also, little bit of trivia here, Matthew Tkachuk is the only non-leaf to play on a line with both Matthews and Marner. In 2015 at NTDP with Matthews and Bracco (and at times, Roslovic). Then in 2016 with Marner and Dvorak on the MDT line for London in OHL. Now imagine…in 2017, he plays with McDavid and Draisaitl.

I mean tkachuk has had some great teammates in the NHL too. Guadreau in calgary and now barkov in Florida. Obviously mcdavid/drai>>>>>guadreau/barkov but still crazy how he has been playing with top tier NHL talent since he was in his D-2 year.
