Description
Revisiting the Justin Faulk trade-
On September 26th 2019, Justin Faulk and a 5th round pick was traded to the blues in exchange for Joel Edmundson, the blues second best prospect at the time in Dominick Bokk, and a 7th round pick. Carolina retained 15% salary on Faulk at the time. St Louis had won the cup the previous season and were in win now mode. If Carolina were to have retained 50% of faulks salary, it would have saved the blues an extra $1.7m. Coming off of a cup win, the blues were rather strapped on cap and the deal in its whole costed an extra $1m in cap. If the deal were to have saved the blues money, I believe that they would have been comfortable parting with their top prospect in Jordan kyrou instead of their 2nd best prospect in bokk. It’s not like the canes didn’t have the cap space either as the same off-season, they took on all of Patrick marleaus contract and were still well under the cap. If St Louis was high on on kyrou, the canes could have also thrown in a pick. These hypotheticals are fun and not like the typical “oh the bruins should have drafted barzal chabot and Connor” or the “what if my team drafted kucherov instead”. Final question to the few people who actually read this, do you think the canes could have won the cup with kyrou on the team this past year?

You can set your mind at ease, because that was not going to happen. Army refused to include Kyrou in the O'Reilly and Tkachuk talks, so he certainly wasn't going to throw him in the Faulk deal for a couple extra million in cap space one time.

Did you not see the report of the blues package that was offered that included kyrou plus Krug and more. Anyways cap space is a hell of a thing for a cup team. If they could have made a move with the extra space to improve the team towards a second cup, I believe they would have. End of the day it’s all speculation and didn’t happen so it’s a hypothetical.

The thing that bugs me the most is that Toronto basically gave you guys Seth Jarvis. I would have liked Detroit to make that trade but that's not really thing type of move Yzerman makes.

If there is a weak point to Yzerman, it is how he doesn’t weaponize cap as much as other teams. That being said, when you draft, sign, and trade like he does, you don’t have to weaponize your cap space. Probably keeps revenue up by saving a few mil.

That was not a report, and it was thoroughly debunked. Pure fiction. And while you are free to believe as you wish, you're quite simply fooling yourself on this one.

Yeah I get it's still a business and money needs to be made. Detroit wasn't selling a ton of tickets the last few years so I understand not spending as much but Detroit also isn't a poor team so it would have been nice to see more moves like that throughout these last few years other than Mark Staal.

True. If I’m Detroit I’m happy though. Yzerman is that guy.

I would say he has done an above average job so far but not every move has been great in my opinion.

I mean in reality Yzerman is either the best or 2nd best GM. Technically I would have him at 1 right now because sakic became the president of hockey ops in colorado. He’s obviously not going to be perfect but from an outsider view, he has been the closest thing to perfect a current GM is.

Yeah, by a local guy with generally solid info, which is never easy with super stealth Army there. I'm still unable to find where that rumor started, which is never a good sign.

That definitely isn’t. I just saw a blues insider reported it during the whole tkachuk saga. Never saw it was debunked there. Either way you have a damn good player in kyrou on your team.
