Why would Dallas do this? The only reason things aren’t going well is because Nill doesn’t like to give the young guys money (yet can to borderline AHL players), and he won’t get rid of his favourite grit grinders to make space for him and Robo.

At one point he’ll have to budge and sign them.

And if they’re to trade their franchise goalie for that, need much more.

Fairly sure expecting them to take Peterson is a non-starter.

0.00% chance he gets traded. Dallas holds his rights & he has no arbitration. The Stars have all the leverage.

They might compromise a little bit just to get a deal done, but if Oettinger doesn’t sign then he doesn’t play. Dallas has no incentive to trade a 23-year old, borderline elite starting goalie. The only way he doesn’t play in Dallas next season is if another team offers an absurd offer sheet that Dallas would be stupid to match.

And if he were traded, this trade isn’t it. If Dallas even entertained trading Oettinger, just about any young player (minus Byfield), and any of the Kings 1st Round Picks are on the table.

A 27 year old Cal Petersen for a 23 year old Jake Oettinger plus 2 2nds, You're not even close here man. He probably wants at least $5,000,000 to play in Dallas. So high taxed California would be more.

I had a nice wet dream about the scenario where Oettinger wants $7 million and Dallas doesn't want to pay more than $5.5 million because the Stars also have to sign Jason Robertson, so we offer Alex Turcotte, Cal Petersen and our 2024 first for Oettinger and then sign him for $7 million and then trade Sean Walker and then everybody lives happily ever after, but that doesn't work for the reasons pointed out by the esteemed @TheMooterus: Oettinger doesn't have arbitration rights yet (the time for electing arb has passed, anyway) and his cap hit doesn't exist, so there's no pressure to get him on the ice, ergo no pressure on Nill to do anything other than keep sending Oettinger's agent paperwork.

Oettinger looks like the real deal, should hurry up and sign him.

Nill is likely holding firm. Oetter doesn’t have much leverage. It’s a business. People need to stop freaking out. The press has to write about something. Then people read that and run around spreading it. And here we are

Why?? Why does everyone think we should just hurry up and throw money at him??? He had a solid but not amazing regular season and one good playoff series. So we should just throw a massive contract at him right? Oh wait he’s a RFA with no arb rights and his only real comparable is Hart at just under four million per. Oetter is happy in Dallas. They’ll come to a reasonable deal that works for both sides. I don’t know what’s taking so long. Maybe Nill is on a nice summer vacation. Maybe a deal is already in place and Nill is looking at other possible moves. Hard to know when the press just dumps out whatever they feel like gets the most attention
