Would love Tkachuk the Sabres. Would love that trade too. But...

I highly doubt he'd re-sign in Buffalo which would be a waste of resources for just one season of play.

If Treliving has anything close to that attitude good luck getting anything for the mans. Terrible market to maximize trade value. Tkachuk would be fine waiting out another year to walk for free, that's if the rumors are true, hell he could just want more money.

As a Sabres fan, sure I'd love a player of Mathews caliber... but only for a fleecing. Even then you have to invest in the man. Not a single team wins Stanley cups with inflated player salaries, no team has ever won the cup with a player making 10 million. No money left for depth. Does a player earn that money? Sure, but GREAT players take less to build more with their club.

Now there are plenty of silly impatient GM's to bite on this so I'm not saying they wont get a great return, Daddy in St. Louis could help that along, but I'd at least start planning the Flames funeral now.

As for the Sabres, I'd much rather take a chance at staying patient and striking gold with one of many strong prospects already in Sabres system. When I say many I mean three in the last draft alone, two from the previous draft and so on.

Lol what? Who was the last 100 point player under 25 to hit the market? 25 teams will be interested in adding him.

Yeah no. I already addressed that. Literally every team in the NHL must take a swipe at that. My posts previous point was good luck getting what the fans think is fair, literally the whole theme to it buddy. By me saying "good luck getting anything for the mans" was referring to the fact no one is overpaying in this market, so, if Treliving has the same attitude you do (which is a joke) like haha, turning away all low balls all these teams know he walks the following year and they get to make their cases for FREE. So He's going to have to take something and its most likely going to take a three team deal.

That's not how it works lol. It doesn't matter what teams are interested. It matters what teams Tkachuk is interested in.

It's a mix of both. He will almost certainly be willing to sign with multiple teams. From there it becomes a bidding war, exactly the same as with how Eichel went down

Eichel was signed long term very different. Sabres could've traded him to any team. That's not the case with Tkachuk. A team will not trade for him if he's not willing to sign long term. This is more like Mark Stone when he got traded. Fiala is another one. Where an extension would be part of the trade / the player was a UFA in the summer.

Fiala isn't comparable because Minnesota couldn't take any cap back and Tkachuk is a drastically better player. Mark Stone was 1 month away from walking as a UFA.

Calgary will certainly give permission to talk negotiations so you can guarantee whoever gets him will get the full 7 year extension

Of course they are comparable. All 3 had one year to free agency. All 3 didn't want to resign with their team. All 3 are wingers. All 3 needed an extension with their new team.

You were drawing comparables to Eichel who isn't even remotely similar.

People in this situation usually only have two or three teams they are willing to sign long term with. Might even be only St. Louis based on Strickland's reporting.

Stone was traded at the TDL as a pending UFA, thats not 1 year thats 1-2 months.

Fiala is a fraction of the player Tkachuk is. While a somewhat similar situation they aren't nearly the same value. That's like saying Reinhart is just as good as Tkachuk when he refused to sign long term with the Sabres

You are aware Eichel was traded at 10 cents to the dollar right? That injury greatly effected his trade value.

Why do you keep nitpicking with these examples so hard? No example is going to be absolutely perfect. Their names aren't Matthew either. They have some huge similarities though. Tkachuk will be a pending UFA if he makes it to arbitration.

> That's like saying Reinhart is just as good as Tkachuk when he refused to sign long term with the Sabres

Nobody is comparing their skill levels. Stone was one of the best two way wingers in the game at the time though.

> You are aware Eichel was traded at 10 cents to the dollar right? That injury greatly effected his trade value.

Yes just like needing a huge extension and likely only wanting to sign with one team will hurt someone's trade value.

You arent getting this at all. I am saying there will be a bidding war for Tkachuk. Exactly like how there was a bidding war for Eichel. I am not comparing their contract status at all when I said that.

Though I do think Tkachuk can definitely return a package similar to what Eichel got

That's what your hoping will happen. There likely won't be a bidding war because he likely only wants to sign with one team.

> I am not comparing their contract status at all when I said that.

That's literally one of the most important parts of a player's trade value. That's why there was a bidding war for Eichel. He didn't need to sign an extension with any team. They could've traded him to a team he didn't want to go to. There still wasn't some massive bidding war though because it's hard to move a 10M player.

> Though I do think Tkachuk can definitely return a package similar to what Eichel got

If Tkachuk was signed long term he would get a great return. He's not so I'm expecting less than Eichel got.
