Description
I've found this offseason vexing as for the longest time, the trick to an Oilers AGM was to build a roster that could actually get them into the playoffs and let Jesus take the wheel. Now the trick is to get them locked into contender status: easier said than done in my opinion.

Minimal moves and minimal overturn. I think Edmonton can add Campbell and do two of the following:

1. Add a Giroux/Kane caliber forward
2. Improve the blueline
3. Improve the forward depth

As much as I'd like to bring Kane back and sign Giroux, it just doesn't seem feasible. The money is finite and unless Edmonton runs as many rookies as it can, I think the money is better served elsewhere. Of course this all goes in the bin if they acquire one of Allen or Reimer, as then the matter of being able to finance a game-breaking forward on top of all of the other progressive changes becomes substantially easier. I eagerly await the 13th!

I mean I'd bump up the pick to a first if Edmonton can retain Samorukov and Florida tosses in a mid-to-late pick. The AGM values for Weegar have been all over the place so I didn't really know where to base the value.

What I do know is that Puljujarvi's next deal - with Edmonton or any other club - is likely cheaper than Weegar's contract and Dima makes next to league-minimum. There's inherent value to the Panthers in those kinds of value contracts.

Wouldnt Strome make more sense to come in as a C then LW. As a I feel if you want a 3mill LW a guy like Marchment makes more sense or is this because of the McDavid connection

Also Johan Larsson probs better as a LW as the dude and faceoffs are not a great mix. If you need a faceoff guy Victor Rask is cheaper and a good defensive C and at 975k - 1.2 mill could be a good addition

McDavid connection. Hence a one-year deal.

I feel its a gamble but could pay off

Honestly for the Oilers the UFA's I would look at

1. Darcy Kuemper (Outbid last year so make up for it this year with a 6 x 4 year deal)

2. Victor Rask (Never was worth 4mill but at 1mill x 2 years good 3c candidate)

3. Curtis Lazar ( Rough and tumble 4th liner)

4. Paul Stasny (Vet presence and could be good on a 1 year deal)

Found the thread I assume you meant to link lol

I still think that’s a LOT of money for a guy who had one elite month (November), and then a sub-.900 sv% in the 2022 calendar year, which is 4 months of regular season + 7 playoff games. I think anyone giving him more than the Husso deal may regret it. Like at that point just offer Kuemper the classic 6x6 that the best goalies seem to get (Markstrom, Binnington, Grubauer, etc.). I think he’s got a far larger sample size as a much better goalie as a starter than Campbell over the last several years.

I also think that probably won’t be enough to get Weegar, although I can see Florida being interested in Puljujarvi. I would hope Ottawa tops that easily with C. Brown half-retained and higher end prospects than Samorukov for one, and I’m sure several teams would be willing to include their 2023 1st.

The Strome signing would be very savvy though. If he can show some chemistry with McDavid on an affordable contract, that would be excellent for the Oilers (and annoying for me lol). Regardless he’d be a good signing, because he gives you more centre options, you could also run him at 3C and get Nuge back into the top 6 that way. He’s probably a better fit for the Oilers than Giroux tbh, due to being more affordable and younger (plus I’m not sure Giroux can play centre full time anymore, although he’s still an elite faceoff man).

On Holloway, do you think he’s gonna stick all season, or get a 9 game tryout and spend the year in the AHL? I like him a lot as a prospect but haven’t been following him too closely this year.

I agree on Campbell, I just think the organization has tipped their hand again and are all-in on another soon-to-be ex-Leaf. I'd much rather trade for Reimer or offer such a deal to Kuemper.

I think the Oilers have the ability to upgrade their pick to a first in the Weegar trade, although I'd prefer something small coming back to Edmonton as well in that deal.

I also really like the idea of Strome to Edmonton for free. Inside source suggests that it's already a handshake deal. Time will tell!

I'm unsure if Holoway sticks but I think he does. The lines are set up such that Edmonton has in essence two third lines: the hard-minutes workboots and lunchpail line and a soft-minutes kid line. I don't see the value in running a replacement-caliber player in Holloway's stead as it only cuts from the offense that line brings. Maybe if Gagner resigns in Edmonton he can have that role and Holloway gets a full season in the AHL?

I consider myself to be one of Puljujärvi's biggest fans.
But him along with the other assets you shipped really aren't nowhere near enough for Weegar, who's at a steal of cap hit and what I consider to be a top 15 defender in the NHL.

Also, that seems a bit steep for Campbell.
Would make more sense to check in with Kuemper if you're looking to pay 5.5 - 6m for a starting goalie.

Strome, Larsson and Kulak are all great value picks however imo.
I don't really see any reason why Oilers couldn't get back into the final 4 for next season, especially if Draisaitl can remain healthy throughout the playoffs.
