Plenty of top six wingers available in FA, no need to pay assets for Fiala or DeBrincat when Nichushkin, Copp or Marchment would be more than enough for a forward addition.
Chychrun isn’t really a need either, and would be stupidly expensive to acquire.

I think that Fiala is going to be the best balance between cost to acquire and cost to pay, if you don't mind giving up your 2023 first. If you do, then one of the second-tier UFAs you've signed here makes sense.

It’s going to be an interesting off season. I do think the Cat will be traded, NJ is an option. I suspect wherever he goes, that teams fans will be overwhelmed with the cost. That is until they see him play 82 games. He is one of the rare polarizing figures where his current team’s fans don’t want him traded and the other teams fans don’t want him traded for with the cost.

Seems like the general consensus from Devils fans is to go after free agents rather than make a trade. Probably the smartest thing for them to do, to be honest.

I think Fiala is the best fit for the Devils for trade targets since he is apparently friends with Hischier, he's younger than any of the top free agent targets, and I think he'd sign long-term in New Jersey (friends with Hischier as I said and our beat writer has speculated that he'd be willing to sign long-term in a big city). He also should cost less than the top free agent targets, I'd imagine he'll sign around $7.5-$7.8M for 5-7 years (remember the Devils would be buying some UFA years so I think Fiala would get more than Hischier or Bratt). Return packages have been discussed ad nauseum, but generally Devils fans don't want to give up any of 2OA, Holtz, or Mercer for Fiala while Wild fans generally don't want to move Fiala unless it includes one of these assets.

yeah. he was arguing with a guy in my one post that 1 year of RFA is the same as 1 year of UFA. i stayed out of it but was concerned that he said Vanecek had no real value and that his stats are bad. not worth arguing. it would be more productive bashing my head off the wall

As a Hawks fan, I love the idea of Holtz + 2OA for Debrincat. It seems like Fiala would be a nice Debrincat-lite, and the cost should probably reflect that.

Would do Vanecek for Hughes (50% retained) and 2022 first. Play and drip is worth Jack Hughes and the alliteration in his name alone is worth the 2022 first.
