Jackets make a huge deal at the Draft

Créé par: Jacketsman61
Équipe: 2022-23 Blue Jackets de Columbus
Date de création initiale: 20 mai 2022
Publié: 21 mai 2022
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
This deal is unique but it does have a lot of potential. This helps both teams. The Leafs get Nyquist at half retention although I could see a team come in as a third party to retain another 25%. They also get a good young player who has years of team control in Texier, along with some draft picks. The Leafs have expended some draft picks over the past few seasons and this would be and interesting way to recoup some.

The Jackets get Nylander and add to a forward group that is looking to take some steps forward.

In the Draft the Jackets take Savoie at 6 and take Marco Kasper at 12.

texier and nyqvist are not pieces that would be the center of any nylander trade.

Nylander to Columbus fit is something really interesting and worth exploring but I think the package is more likely to be one of CBJ’s firsts.

make one of those 2nds 12OA and it would probably work. Wouldn't pay more than that, we already have Laine as a winger that won't play D.
At that point it's too much. No need to make this deal

Toronto is a win now team. The idea is for Toronto to get a player that can replicate a lot of the points that Nylander generated but also to get a younger player that can contribute and make Toronto a deeper team. They create cap space to get better goaltending and they also get some draft picks including a possibly great pick. Realistically, Toronto is going to be hard pressed to find a team willing to take on the cap hit without Toronto having to take back cap. You add in the ask for young talent that produces at or near the same clip of Nylander, and that becomes almost impossible. Nylander has two years left on his contract but there are no guarantees he re-signs. The team acquiring him is not going to give up that much for him. Toronto have to be more realistic about the ask.

except that if another team wants him, they are going to have to give up more than that because it's a terrible offer.

It’s not a terrible offer. In fact it is more inline with what teams around the league are willing to pay. You want this trade to be that Toronto gets the best players in the deal now as compared to later. To do that it would have to be one for one and likelihood is there would be no cap space gained which puts Toronto right back at square one. Toronto won’t win a Cup with this team the way it is. They don’t have the goaltending and don’t have the bottom 6 to win it. To fix those areas they will have to deal from the core. Matthews is a no go. Marner is practically off limits. And there is no way to move Tavares’s contract.

No, it's a terrible offer. and teams would easily offer more because they know they wouldnt get nylander for this. they can move more than enough cap space in a hundred other ways than getting a terrible return like this

Not as terrible of an offer as people make it out to be. However, your proposal is quite underwhelming especially when Nyquist is older and is injury prone and I like Texier a lot as a depth piece with some potential to play in the Leafs top 6.
If you'd change Nyquist for Bjorkstrand it'd be more attractive for both parties.

Injury prone? Check that again. He played all 82 games last year and aside from his shoulder injury (which has obviously fully healed) he has not had a season in which he has not played at least 70 games since becoming a full time NHL player. If anything his durability should prove as an extra asset.

Bjorkstrand straight up for Nyquist is an overpay alone. He is an incredibly valuable 2-way player on a better contract with more term.

I wouldn't recall a Bjorkstrand-Nylander trade an overpayment. I think it's actually a fair trade for both teams. The Leafs would get a better 2way forward. The Jackets would get a more gifted player offensively.

Fair enough. I'm still not a fan of the initial proposal because of the age factor. Yes, you also include Texier as young piece in your trade but I don't know how impactful he'll turn out be with the Leafs.

That is the intriguing factor. Texier may explode into a star in Toronto. As young as Texier is, he could be a staple for them for a decade or more. On the other side, the Jackets could lose Nylander after two seasons. Point is, the team trading trading a player such as Nylander has to look at the from one of two point of views. One, do I want to trade him for a player just like him from a production standpoint and forsake the cap space need which is one of the main reasons to trade him? Or, do they pick up some players, who can produce collectively close if not at the same clip of Nylander and create depth and cap space for a Toronto team that is sorely in need of both? Remember Toronto has only 2 more years of Matthews contract before they will have to try and re-sign him. Sometimes you have to think long term more than just the short term.

I don't see it that way. The only year that Nylander didn't play with either Matthews, Tavares or Marner for the majority of his icetime he was a .5 p/g player. I have very little faith that he could replicate any of the success he has had without a superstar player on his line. Bjorkstrand has proven he is fully capable of producing without that quality of linemate. There is no chance I would trade Bjorkstrand for any package that had Nylander as the centerpiece. Way too much risk for very little payoff.

Here's the thing, Nyquist is a UFA in 2023 and he probably won't resign with the team and Texier is an RFA in 2023. The Leafs better hope Texier is going to be just as impactful as Nylander would have been with the Leafs if they are to make this trade. Also, the Jackets don't have as big of contracts as the Leafs do, which would make it easier for the Jackets to resign Nylander.

Which is the reason the Jackets would be interested in the deal. If the Jackets didn’t have time to get him signed the Jackets would never make the deal. But with Texier they would still have 3 years of team control as opposed to 2 with Nylander. The Jackets could always sweeten the deal by adding Foudy or Bemstrom to the deal.
