Devils havent taken a cap dump in six years

Description
Maybe call it “Capstipation“?

But the Devils haven’t taken a straight cap dump in six years, since the Savard trade with Florida. They have taken a couple higher salaried veterans to fill needs, but have not intently taken on dead weight.

Where we have weaponized our cap space is with salary retention: Hall, Vatanen, Palmieri, Zajac, Johansson, etc.

A few examples below of types of trades NJD would do and not do (don’t think too much about which teams/pieces as they are just being used as examples here)

extremely glad that the first line of the description finished the joke started in the title

i honestly think the Devils should take that Dadonov trade without blinking if they were offered it. showcase him in his walk year, make sure you study up on his NTC teams, and if you're out of the playoff hunt at TDL, trade him out for a a future. Get a 2nd to take him in and another 2nd to send him out - how can you lose?

Barbashev has been good this year, but doesn’t fill a glaring need. We need a definitive top 6 winger and Barbashev just broke out this year. Without Graves, we’re thin on LHD

      That got me pretty good.

on a more serious note, i would have thought "taking on cap dumps/dead weight" was a bad thing. Y'all were on a good streak of not taking those deals.

Nah, I'd take that trade for the Devils. We aren't competing this year and Graves is most likely not coming back when is contract is up (assuming we sign severson instead). Sure, we are thin this year if we trade Graves but we could also just sign a LHD in FA. After this year, we are loaded with LHD (Bahl, Siegs, Okhotyuk, L. Hughes, Shakir, maybe Topias Vilen).

I'd take a flyer on Barbashev and see if he can repeat his performance

Fair enough. What about Barbashev plus Scandella? Won't play top minutes but can at least fill a gap.

Love these. I know people are going to immediately jump all over them when you do them to say "NO WAY MY TEAMZ WOULD DO THAT!", but it's an excellent example of the way NJ has gone over the past number of years.

That being said, and irrelevant to the above post, but John Gibson to NJ...let's make it happen.

I was using as an example of a type of trade Devils don’t normally make (even when they had the most cap space in the league, they avoided them).

If I had said Monahan and 6th, people would say 6th is not enough…so it had to be Monahan and 1st as if, “even if Calgary is sending premium asset, it’s not a trade we make”

      GIVE ME JACK HUGHES!

Kidding. If you guys hadn't moved up so far with your 500th career lotto win, I'm sure we could have had an interesting convo about maybe moving up from the Boston pick or something, but there's no way 2OA gets moved for a goalie, and moving up from 10 to 2 just doesn't seem worth it this year. I'd be pretty interested in something that has Shak involved though.

Barbashev is interesting to me as he would likely slide into Boqvist spot at 3C, probably better on both ends, but giving up a little in transition. Would also put Mercer at 1RW.

A 3rd line of Foote - Barbashev - Zetterlund could fit Fitzy’s “heavier skill” approach.

That's a big 'no' from CGY. Somebody would take a reconstructed Mony for a low draft pick before CGY would ever give him away AND a 1st Rd Pick.

I even disagree on a 6th, if he is healthy (and any team acquiring him would have full access to his medicals ofc) then I am quite confident Calgary will not be paying to move him

I was using it as an example of a trade the Devils would *not* do. So there is not anything to decline here.

Not even close to getting Roy out of Vegas.

And fat chance of Brad Treliving attaching a 1st round pick to move Sean Monahan.
